Dual sump pumps installed in a large basement pit in Canal Fulton, Ohio

Sump Pumps That Keep Up With Canal Fulton Groundwater

Canal Fulton sits along the Tuscarawas River and the old Ohio and Erie Canal, and homes in the valley can see groundwater rise quickly after snowmelt and long rains. When the pit fills that often, the pump has to be sized and set up for heavy duty. K & K Plumbing installs and repairs sump systems in Canal Fulton and nearby Massillon, New Franklin and Green, about 18 miles from our shop in East Canton.

When the Pump Seems to Run All the Time

A pump that runs every few minutes for days after a storm is not necessarily broken. In lower-lying parts of the area, the soil around a foundation can stay saturated long after the rain stops, and the drain tile keeps delivering water to the pit. The pump is doing exactly what it should.

The concern is wear. Every start puts stress on the motor and switch, and a pump that cycles thousands of times a season will not last as long as one that runs occasionally. That is why we look closely at capacity, pit size and switch settings for homes with steady inflow, rather than dropping in whatever pump was there before.

Setting Up a Heavy-Duty System

For basements that see a lot of water, a few changes make a large difference in reliability and pump life.

  • A larger pit or liner so the pump runs longer, less often, instead of short bursts
  • A pump with enough capacity for the actual lift from the pit to the outlet, not just the depth of the hole
  • Cast iron construction, which handles frequent running and heat better than lighter housings
  • Dual primary pumps in one pit, or an alternating setup, so the load is shared and one can carry on if the other fails
  • A battery backup and high-water alarm as a final layer of protection
  • A discharge line large enough to move the water without strain

Winter Problems: Frozen Discharge Lines

Because many Canal Fulton pumps keep running into December and again during January thaws, the discharge line outside is exposed to freezing weather while it is still carrying water. If the outlet freezes solid, the pump pushes against a blocked pipe, overheats and can burn out, while the pit overflows.

We prevent that by sloping the exterior line so it drains completely between cycles, keeping long horizontal runs to a minimum, and adding a freeze relief fitting near the house that lets water escape if the line beyond it is blocked. Keeping the outlet clear of snow piles and leaf debris helps too.

Repair Calls We See Often

Frequent cycling tends to wear out specific parts first. Float switches are the most common culprit, followed by check valves that start to leak back and let the same water cycle through the pump repeatedly. Silt and fine gravel washed in through the drain tile can also build up in the bottom of the pit and clog the intake.

On a repair visit we test the pump under load, check the switch and valve, clean out the pit if needed and look at the outlet outside. If a single part is the problem, we replace it. If the pump is worn from years of heavy use, we will recommend a replacement and explain why, with a free estimate before any work.

Protecting the Rest of the House

A sump system handles groundwater, but a wet basement can also come from slow drains or failing pipes. Our Canal Fulton drain service can clear and inspect floor drains and laterals, and we handle plumbing leaks in Canal Fulton homes when the water is not coming from outside. Frequently Asked Questions

My Canal Fulton sump pump runs every few minutes after rain. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. Saturated soil can feed the pit for days. If the pump empties the pit and shuts off cleanly each time, it is working. If it runs without lowering the water or cycles every few seconds, have it checked.

Should I get a bigger pump or add a second one?

Often a second pump is the better answer. Two pumps share the load and give you a spare if one fails. A much larger single pump can short cycle in a small pit. We look at inflow, pit size and lift before recommending either.

Can a frozen discharge line damage my sump pump?

Yes. If the line freezes, the pump runs against a blockage, overheats and may burn out. A properly sloped line and a freeze relief fitting near the house prevent most of these failures.

Is it normal for my sump pump to run in the middle of winter?

During thaws and winter rain, yes. Groundwater does not stop just because it is cold. Keep the outdoor outlet clear of snow so the water has somewhere to go.
