Expert Guide to Bath & Kitchen Remodeling Services: Transform Your Home
Transforming your home through strategic renovations can significantly increase property value while enhancing your daily living experience. When…

A disposal sits at the busiest point of the kitchen: the sink drain, the dishwasher outlet and an electrical connection all meet under one cabinet. K & K Plumbing installs new units, fixes jams and leaks, and replaces worn-out disposers for homes and businesses across Stark County and neighboring Summit County. If you are not sure whether yours can be saved, we will look at it and give you a free estimate before any work starts.
Most calls fall into one of three groups: a unit that has stopped working, a unit that leaks, or a kitchen that needs a disposal added or swapped during an upgrade. We handle all three, and because the disposal is tied into the rest of the sink plumbing, we look at the parts around it too.
A typical visit can include any of the following, depending on what we find:
Disposals rarely fail all at once. They usually give a few hints first, and catching them early can mean a simple repair instead of water damage inside the sink base.
A low hum with no grinding almost always means the plates are jammed or the motor is seizing. Grinding or metallic rattling usually means something hard is inside the chamber. Water pooling on the cabinet floor can come from the sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, the discharge elbow or a crack in the housing itself, and each one has a different fix. Slow draining on one side of a double sink, recurring odors after cleaning, and a reset button that trips again and again are also worth a call.
If the housing is cracked, the motor is rusted through, or the unit leaks from the bottom seam, repair is not practical. Water getting past the internal seals means the motor is already exposed. At that point we will explain the replacement options instead of patching something that will fail again.

In a house, the main questions are noise, horsepower, how much cabinet space you have and whether the home drains to a city sewer or a private septic system. Many Stark County homes outside the city limits are on septic, and that changes what we recommend about unit choice and daily use.
Commercial settings are a different job. Restaurants, church kitchens, schools and break rooms put far more volume through a disposer, and the drain line downstream has to handle it. In those spaces we pay close attention to the pipe size, the flow of water used during grinding, and how the disposer relates to any grease interceptor on the line. We will tell you plainly when a unit is undersized for the work you are asking it to do.
We keep the process simple. You call or send a message, we schedule a visit, and we look at the unit and the plumbing around it. You get a clear estimate and an explanation of what we found before anything is replaced.
Once you approve the plan, our plumber does the work, cleans up the cabinet and countertop, and runs water through the system with the disposal and dishwasher operating so you can see there are no drips. A final quality check is part of every job, not an extra.

Disposals come in two feed styles. Continuous-feed units run while you add scraps and are the common choice. Batch-feed units only run with the stopper locked in place, which some households prefer for safety around children.
Motor size matters more than most people expect. A 1/3 horsepower unit is fine for light use, while 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower suits most family kitchens. One horsepower models grind more finely and handle tougher scraps, which can be helpful on septic systems and in heavy-use kitchens. Higher-end models add sound insulation, stainless steel grinding parts and a more corrosion-resistant chamber. We can install a unit you have already bought or help you pick one that fits your cabinet, your drain height and your budget.
Before we arrive, clear out the cabinet under the sink so we have room to work, and note what happened just before the problem started. If water is leaking, shut off the dishwasher and avoid running the sink. Never reach into the chamber with your hand; flip the breaker or unplug the unit if you need to look inside with a flashlight.
Day to day, run cold water before, during and after grinding, feed scraps a little at a time, and keep grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice and stringy vegetables like celery out of the drain. Those items cause most of the clogs we clear in kitchen lines. A periodic grind of ice cubes and a rinse with dish soap helps keep the chamber clean. If you would like a yearly look at your whole system, our plumbing maintenance plan includes an annual inspection and a discount on labor and materials.
Disposal problems often travel with other issues at the sink. A dripping kitchen faucet, a sprayer that leaks under the counter, or a drain line that clogs no matter what you do are all common neighbors. We also handle kitchen faucet repair and replacement, drain clearing for stubborn kitchen lines, and full kitchen remodel plumbing when you are reworking the whole space.

A hum means the motor is getting power but the grinding plate cannot turn, usually because something is wedged inside. Turn off the power before doing anything. If an Allen wrench in the hex socket on the bottom of the unit will not free it, or the hum returns right away, the motor bearings may be failing and it is time for us to take a look.
Jams, flange leaks, loose connections and dishwasher hose problems are usually worth repairing. A cracked housing, a leak from the bottom of the motor, or heavy rust on the body generally means replacement is the better value, and we will tell you which situation you are in.
For most family kitchens a 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower unit is a good fit. Light users can get by with 1/3 horsepower, while large households, frequent cooks and homes on septic often do better with a 1 horsepower model that grinds more finely. Cabinet space and drain height also limit what will fit.
Many homes on septic use disposals, but the extra solids add to the load on the tank. Choosing a unit that grinds finely, limiting what you put down it and keeping up with regular tank pumping all help. We can talk through whether a disposal makes sense for your system.
Yes. We can install a customer-supplied unit as long as it fits the sink and cabinet. We will check the drain height and the dishwasher connection first so there are no surprises.
An affordable way to keep your plumbing in top shape, cut down on surprise repairs and extend the life of your equipment.
