Canton Water Service Lines: Who Owns What, and How We Fix Yours

When water bubbles up near the sidewalk in front of a Canton house, the first question is usually whose problem it is. The answer depends on which side of the curb stop the leak sits. K & K Plumbing is about five miles from Canton at our East Canton shop, and we provide water main repair in Canton for the private side of the line, working with the water department when their part of the system is involved.

The pieces of a city water connection

Every city-served home has the same basic parts between the street and the kitchen faucet. Knowing them makes the conversation with the utility, and with us, much easier.

  • Street main: the large pipe under the road, owned and maintained by the water utility.
  • Corporation stop and utility-side line: the tap on the main and the pipe out to the curb stop, generally the utility's responsibility.
  • Curb stop and curb box: a buried valve near the property line, reached through a small capped pipe in the lawn or sidewalk.
  • Private service line: the pipe from the curb stop to your house, generally the owner's responsibility.
  • Meter and main shutoff: usually in the basement where the line comes through the wall.

Figuring out which side is leaking

Water coming up in the tree lawn or street, especially near the curb box, may be on the utility's side, and the city should be called first. Water surfacing closer to the house, a damp basement wall where the line enters, or a meter that keeps turning with your inside valve closed usually points to the private service line.

Since the boundary can vary from one system to another and even with how an older connection was installed, we confirm responsibility with the utility before we dig. That way you are not paying to repair something the city will fix, and the city is not waiting on you for something that is theirs.

Working on tight city lots

Many Canton neighborhoods were built in the early twentieth century, with narrow lots, front porches close to the sidewalk, mature trees and service lines that sometimes run beneath steps or walkways. That makes the dig itself the hardest part of the job.

We plan the route to minimize what has to be disturbed. Sometimes the old line can stay in place while a new one is pulled or bored along a slightly different path, avoiding a porch or a tree's main roots. Where a sidewalk has to be opened, we let you know in advance so you can plan for its restoration. Utilities are marked through 811 before any digging, and the new line goes in below frost depth with a new main shutoff valve inside.

Shutoffs that will not shut

Older Canton homes often have a gate-style main shutoff that has not been turned in years. When it finally gets used in an emergency, it may not close, or it may start leaking at the stem. Replacing it with a quarter-turn ball valve is a small job that pays off the next time you need to stop the water fast.

When the city replaces the street main

During street main projects, utilities typically reconnect each house's service line to the new main. If your private line is old galvanized or lead, that can be a good moment to replace your side as well, while the street side is new. If you receive notice of upcoming work, give us a call and we will look at your line and talk through timing.

Old service lines often feed old indoor pipes, too. If pressure is poor at every fixture, repiping a Canton home may be part of the fix. If you cannot tell where the problem starts, our plumbing troubleshooting in Canton sorts it out first.

Our process from estimate to backfill

It starts with a free estimate and a clear explanation of what we found. You approve the specifications, we coordinate the curb shutoff with the utility as needed, and we complete the repair or replacement. The line is pressure tested before backfill, and the work finishes with a quality inspection. For indoor drips and hidden pipe leaks, our Canton leak repair service is the place to start, and our county-wide water main page covers materials and methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water is bubbling up near my curb box. Who do I call?

Call the water utility first, since a leak at or before the curb stop is often theirs. If they determine the leak is on your side, we can take it from there.

I cannot find my curb box. Can you locate it?

Often it is under grass or a sidewalk patch near the property line. We can help find it, and the utility can sometimes provide its location from their records.

Will my porch or front steps have to come out to replace the line?

Not always. We look for a route that avoids structures, and in some cases a new line can be pulled or bored on a different path. We explain the options at the estimate.

Should I replace my main shutoff valve when the service line is replaced?

We recommend it. A new quarter-turn valve is inexpensive compared to the line itself and ensures you can shut off water quickly in an emergency.
