Clearing Root Clogs and Main Line Backups in Alliance
Alliance has a lot of mature street trees and a lot of older houses, and the two together explain many of the drain calls we get there. Roots find their way into aging sewer laterals, and before long the basement floor drain is backing up. K & K Plumbing provides drain unclogging and main line cleaning in Alliance, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop, along with camera checks that show what is going on underground.
How Roots End Up Inside the Sewer Line
The sewer lateral running from an older Alliance house to the street was often built from clay tile or cast iron, laid in short sections with joints every few feet. Over decades, those joints shift and open slightly. Warm, moist air and a trickle of water leak out, and tree roots growing nearby follow it.
Once a hair-thin root gets through a joint, it grows into a dense mat inside the pipe. Paper and waste catch on it, and the line slowly closes. Clearing the clog brings relief, but the roots will grow back unless the joint is repaired or the line is cleaned on a schedule.
Symptoms of a Root-Blocked Sewer
Root clogs build gradually, so the early signs are easy to dismiss. Pay attention if you notice:
- The basement floor drain wetting or backing up when the washing machine empties
- Toilets that flush sluggishly throughout the house, not just one
- Gurgling in the lowest drains when upstairs fixtures run
- Backups that come and go, often worse after heavy rain
- A clog that returns several months after the line was cleared

Our Approach on Alliance Main Lines
We start by asking which fixtures are affected and when, then locate the best access point. Many older homes have a cleanout in the basement near the front wall, though some are buried, painted over or missing. If there is no usable cleanout, we may go in through a toilet flange or a roof vent.
To clear roots, we use a heavy cable machine with a root-cutting head sized to the pipe. Once flow is restored, we run a camera down the line to see the extent of root growth, whether any sections are cracked or offset, and how far from the house the trouble sits. For heavy grease or sludge in addition to roots, hydro jetting can clean the pipe walls more completely, as long as the pipe is sound enough to handle it.
When cleaning is not the end of the story
If the camera shows a collapsed section or a badly separated joint, cleaning will only buy time. We will show you the footage and explain what a repair would involve so you can plan. Free estimates apply to that work too.
Indoor Clogs in Older Alliance Homes
Not every backup is in the main line. Older homes often have cast iron drain stacks and galvanized branch lines inside the walls, and those narrow over time with rust scale and buildup. A kitchen sink that clogs again and again may have a branch line that is half closed. A camera check of the interior line helps here as well.
Kitchen drains also suffer when a disposal is worn or used heavily. If yours jams or drains poorly, our Alliance disposal repair service may solve the clog at its source. Repeated toilet clogs can point to an older low-performance toilet; our toilet installation and repair team in Alliance can help you choose a better one.

Keeping Roots at Bay
For root-prone lines, scheduled cleaning before the pipe fully closes is usually less disruptive than waiting for the next backup. Many Alliance homeowners land on a regular interval after the first camera inspection shows how quickly roots return. Avoid planting new trees directly over the sewer route, and keep wipes and grease out of the system so whatever roots remain do not catch debris.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my basement floor drain back up when the washer runs?
The floor drain is usually the lowest opening on the system. When the main line is partly blocked, the washer's rush of water has nowhere to go and comes up there first. It is a classic sign of a main line clog, often from roots in older Alliance homes.
Will roots come back after you clear the line?
Usually yes, unless the joint they entered through is repaired. Clearing removes the roots inside the pipe, but the tree is still there. Regular cleaning or a pipe repair keeps the problem under control.
What does a sewer camera inspection show?
It shows the inside of the pipe in real time: roots, cracks, offset joints, sags that hold water and buildup. We use it to decide whether cleaning is enough or a repair is needed.
My house has no cleanout. Can you still clear the main?
Yes. We can often access the line through a toilet opening or roof vent. In some cases, adding a proper cleanout is worth considering to make future service easier.
