Gas fireplace pilot flame surrounding a thermocouple in an Alliance home
Alliance, Stark County

Alliance Gas Fireplace Repair, Starting With the Pilot

When an Alliance homeowner calls about a gas fireplace, the complaint is usually some version of "the pilot won't stay lit." That small flame controls everything else, and K & K Plumbing diagnoses it methodically: flame, sensor, valve, then supply. We also handle full gas fireplace installations and gas line hookups, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop.

How the Pilot Safety Circuit Works

On most standing-pilot fireplaces, the pilot flame wraps around the tip of a thermocouple, a metal probe that produces a tiny electrical current when hot. That current holds a magnet inside the gas valve open. Release the knob, and if the current is too weak, the magnet lets go and the gas shuts off. It is a safety feature, and it is doing its job when the pilot drops out. The trick is figuring out why the current is weak.

Many fireplaces also have a thermopile, a bundle of thermocouples that makes a larger voltage. The thermopile powers the main burner through the wall switch or remote. A tired thermopile shows up differently: the pilot stays lit, but the main flame will not come on or shuts off after a few minutes.

Common Reasons an Alliance Fireplace Pilot Fails

We work through the possibilities in a set order, because the cheapest fix is often the right one.

  • Dirty pilot orifice: dust or a spider web shrinks the flame so it no longer engulfs the probe
  • Worn thermocouple: output drops with age, especially on units that run every winter
  • Loose connection where the thermocouple threads into the valve
  • Bent pilot hood or a probe pushed out of position during cleaning
  • Low gas pressure, sometimes from an undersized line or a partly closed shutoff
  • A failing gas valve magnet, which is rarer but does happen on older units

What a Proper Diagnosis Looks Like

We start by watching the pilot. A healthy flame is steady, mostly blue and covers the top portion of the thermocouple. Then we put a millivolt meter on the thermocouple and thermopile and compare the readings with the manufacturer's range. If the numbers are low with a good flame, the sensor is worn. If the flame is weak, we clean the orifice and check inlet pressure before blaming any parts.

When the pilot assembly is worn, we usually recommend replacing the thermocouple, pilot hood and orifice together from the correct kit for your model. They age together, and doing them as a set saves a second trip.

DIY Thermocouple Swaps: When to Stop

Universal thermocouples are sold at hardware stores, and some owners try the swap themselves. The risk is less in the part than in what surrounds it: fittings overtightened on an aluminum valve, a probe placed slightly out of the flame, or a gas leak at a disturbed connection. If you smell gas after any work on the fireplace, shut the valve, get everyone outside and call your gas utility. For anything beyond relighting the pilot per the instructions on the unit, it is worth having a gas fitter do it.

Fireplaces in Alliance Rental Properties

Alliance has a good number of rental houses and duplexes, including many that serve the University of Mount Union community. A gas fireplace in a rental gets used by tenants who may not know how to relight it or what a normal flame looks like. Landlords benefit from a yearly fall check: pilot cleaned, sensors tested, glass gasket inspected and the vent termination cleared. It cuts down on midwinter calls and gives you a documented safety check.

For homes outside the city on propane, the same service applies, along with confirming tank regulator pressure. Our propane line service in Alliance covers the supply side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my fireplace pilot go out when I let go of the knob?

The thermocouple is not sending enough current to hold the gas valve open. That is usually a dirty pilot, a worn thermocouple or a loose connection at the valve. A meter test tells us which.

What is the difference between a thermocouple and a thermopile?

A thermocouple keeps the pilot gas on. A thermopile makes more voltage and powers the main burner through the switch or remote. Many fireplaces have both.

Can I replace a thermocouple myself?

It is physically possible, but a misplaced probe or a disturbed fitting can cause new problems, including leaks. We recommend leaving it to a gas fitter who can test the circuit and leak-check the work.

Do you install new gas fireplaces in Alliance?

Yes. We install direct-vent and vent-free units and inserts and run the gas line. If your house needs a new supply branch, our Alliance gas line service handles that work.
