Canton Hose Bib Repair After Winter Freeze Damage

Every spring we get calls from Canton homeowners who turned on the outside faucet for the first time and found water running into the basement. Most often, the faucet froze over the winter and split inside the wall. K & K Plumbing handles outside faucet repair in Canton, from freeze damage to everyday drips, about 5 miles from our East Canton shop.

How a Frost-Free Faucet Still Freezes

Frost-free sillcocks are designed so the shutoff valve sits inside the heated house. When you close the faucet, the water in the long tube drains out the spout. But that only works if the water can drain. A garden hose left attached in winter holds water in the tube. When temperatures drop, that water freezes, expands and splits the tube behind the valve.

The damage is hidden. The faucet looks fine from outside and does not leak when it is closed, because the split is upstream of the valve seat but only pressurized when the faucet is open. The first time you use it in spring, water sprays from the crack into the wall cavity or basement ceiling.

Signs Your Outside Faucet Froze

Check inside before you assume all is well. Have someone open the outdoor faucet while you watch the spot where the pipe enters the house.

  • Water dripping or spraying inside the basement near the faucet
  • Wet insulation or a damp ceiling below the faucet location
  • Weak flow from the spout even with the faucet fully open
  • Water seeping out around the faucet flange on the outside wall
  • A faucet that will not shut off fully after winter
  • Water stains on finished basement walls or ceilings

What to Do If It Is Leaking Now

Close the outdoor faucet right away. If water keeps coming, find the shutoff valve on the line feeding that faucet, usually in the basement near the exterior wall, and close it. If there is no separate shutoff or it will not turn, close the main water valve. Then mop up and move anything that could be damaged.

Call us at 330-875-8003. Emergency plumbing and leak containment is available, and we offer plumbing damage inspections that can help with insurance claims. Our Canton leak repair service handles any water that reached walls or ceilings.

Repair or Replace a Frozen Hose Bib

A frost-free sillcock that has split cannot be patched. We cut it out and install a new one sized to your wall thickness, connected to the existing copper or PEX line. We make sure it pitches slightly downward toward the outside so it drains every time it is closed.

If the old line feeding the faucet also froze, we replace that section. Canton has many older homes with aging copper; our copper pipe repair in Canton covers it. For standard compression hose bibs, we check the interior shutoff and drain valve too, so the faucet can be properly winterized next fall.

Every repair starts with a free estimate. You approve the specifications, we do the work, and a quality inspection confirms there are no leaks inside or out.

Keep It From Happening Again

Disconnect every hose before the first hard freeze. If you have a standard hose bib, close the interior shutoff, open the outside faucet to drain it and leave it open. Insulated foam faucet covers add a little protection but do not replace removing the hose. If your faucet is on an exterior wall that gets especially cold, ask us about a longer frost-free model that puts the valve farther inside.

For more on outdoor faucet options, see our hose bib installation and repair guide. We also serve East Canton, North Canton, Louisville, Massillon and Navarre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there water in my basement after I turned on the outside faucet?

Your frost-free sillcock probably froze and split last winter, usually because a hose was left attached. The crack only leaks when the faucet is open. Close it, shut off the line and call us to replace the faucet.

Can a split outdoor faucet be repaired instead of replaced?

No. Once the tube or body splits, the faucet needs to be replaced. It is a straightforward job in most homes.

Will a foam cover protect my outdoor faucet?

It helps a little, but the most important step is disconnecting the hose so a frost-free faucet can drain.

Do you offer help with insurance after a burst outdoor pipe?

We offer plumbing damage inspections and insurance assistance, and we can contain the leak and repair the pipe.
