Where Is That Water Coming From? Plumbing Diagnosis in Canal Fulton
Few things are more frustrating than a wet basement floor with no obvious source. In Canal Fulton, with the Tuscarawas River close by and a mix of historic homes and newer neighborhoods, the answer can be a leaking pipe, a drain, a struggling sump pump or simple condensation. K & K Plumbing sorts out which one it is, then fixes it. We come about 18 miles from our East Canton shop.
Four Usual Suspects for a Wet Basement
When a homeowner calls about water downstairs, we work through the likely sources one at a time. Each leaves different clues:
- Supply line leak: water appears whether or not it has rained, and the meter moves with all fixtures off
- Drain leak: water shows up after a shower, laundry load or dishwasher run, often near a stack or cleanout
- Sump or groundwater: water follows rain or snowmelt and tends to come up along walls, cracks or the floor joint
- Condensation: cold water pipes, toilet tanks and the water heater area drip on humid summer days, with no actual leak
Why it matters which one it is
Each source has a completely different fix. Waterproofing will not stop a leaking drain, and replacing a pipe will not help a sump pit that overflows. A confident diagnosis keeps you from spending money on the wrong solution.
Older Downtown Homes and Newer Neighborhoods
The older houses near the historic district often have stone or block foundations, a patchwork of supply piping and cast iron drains that have been repaired more than once. Here we look closely at drain joints, old floor drains and spots where original pipe meets newer material.
Newer homes on the edges of town tend to have plastic drains and PEX or copper supply lines, and their problems are different. We see loose fittings behind finished walls, water heater connections that were never fully tightened, and sump pumps that were installed by the builder and never tested since. A finished basement can hide a slow leak for a long time, so moisture readings and careful observation matter.

Sump Pumps That Act Strangely
A sump pump that runs constantly in dry weather, short-cycles every few seconds, or hums without moving water is telling you something. Common causes include a stuck float switch, a failed check valve that lets discharged water fall back into the pit, or a discharge line that is frozen or clogged outside. Sometimes a pump runs in dry weather because a plumbing leak is feeding the pit, which is why we look at both.
If the pump itself is worn out, our Canal Fulton sump pump service handles replacement and backup options.
After the Source Is Found
Once we know the cause, we give you a free estimate and options. Leaking supply lines and drains are handled through our leak repair work in Canal Fulton, and worn fixtures, valves or pipe sections move to plumbing repair and replacement. Condensation problems may only need pipe insulation and better airflow. If the water is groundwater, we will tell you so honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if basement water is from plumbing or from outside?
Notice when it appears. Water that shows up regardless of weather points to plumbing. Water that follows rain or melting snow, especially along walls, is usually groundwater. Lay paper towels in the wet spot and check the meter with everything off for more clues.
My cold water pipes drip in July. Is that a leak?
Probably not. Cold pipes sweat when humid air hits them, and the drips can look like a leak. Insulating the pipes and running a dehumidifier usually solves it. We can confirm with a meter test.
Why does my sump pump run when it has not rained?
A failed check valve, a high water table or a plumbing leak draining into the pit can all keep a pump running. We check the pump, the valve and nearby plumbing to find the cause.
