Canal Fulton Repiping When Rusty Water Points to Corroded Pipes
Canal Fulton grew up along the Ohio and Erie Canal, and its historic downtown streets still hold homes far older than the subdivisions that have filled in around the city since. When people call us about rust-colored tap water, it is usually from one of those older houses. K & K Plumbing finds where the discoloration starts and, when the pipes are the cause, replaces them cleanly.
Tracking Down Where Rusty Water Comes From
Discolored water does not always mean you need a repipe. Before we recommend anything, we narrow down the source with a few simple checks you can even start yourself.
- Hot only: if just the hot side runs brown, the water heater tank may be corroding. Flushing or replacing the heater might solve it.
- Every faucet, then clears: a short burst of color after the water sits overnight usually points to galvanized house piping.
- Sudden and neighborhood-wide: if neighbors see it too, the city may be flushing hydrants or working on a main. It typically clears on its own.
- One fixture only: a corroded supply connector or valve at that fixture may be the culprit.
Why the Historic Homes Are Most Affected
Houses built before the 1960s were usually plumbed with galvanized steel. The zinc coating protects the pipe at first, but once it wears away, the steel rusts from the inside. Flakes break loose and show up in your glass, and the remaining scale chokes the pipe so pressure drops. By the time you notice rusty water, the inside of the pipe is typically well along.
Some older Canal Fulton homes have already had their basements re-plumbed in copper, but the original galvanized lines are still hiding in the walls up to second-floor bathrooms. That is why a bathroom can run rusty even when the basement pipes look newer.

Working Carefully Around Plaster and Original Woodwork
Older homes often have plaster on lath, original trim and built-ins that owners want to protect. Plaster does not cut as cleanly as drywall, so we plan routes that use closets, cabinet backs, floor cavities and the basement as much as possible. Flexible PEX tubing is a big help here because it can be fished through bays that rigid pipe could never reach without large openings.
Where openings are unavoidable, we keep them small, square and in places that are easier to patch. We talk through each one with you before the work begins.
Newer Subdivisions Have Different Concerns
Homes built in recent decades around Canal Fulton generally have copper or PEX and do not suffer from rust. When we are called to one of them, the issue is more likely a single failed fitting, a pinhole in copper or a damaged line from a remodel. Those usually call for targeted work through our Canal Fulton leak repair service rather than a full repipe.
Homes from the late 1970s into the 1990s are worth a closer look, though, because some were built with polybutylene tubing that is now well past its expected life.
From Diagnosis to New Lines
If the pipes are the problem, we give you a free estimate covering what will be replaced, the material and how the walls will be handled. After you approve, we install the new system, pressure test it, flush the lines until they run clear and inspect every connection. Our shop is about 18 miles from Canal Fulton, and we also work in New Franklin, Massillon and nearby communities. For more on materials and the overall process, visit our main repiping page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my water run brown in the morning and then clear up?
Water that sits overnight in rusty galvanized pipe picks up iron. Once fresh water from the street flows through, it clears. That pattern is a strong sign of corroded house piping.
How can I tell if rusty water is from the water heater instead of the pipes?
Run cold water only at a faucet. If cold runs clear but hot is discolored, the heater is the more likely source. If both are rusty, the pipes are usually involved.
Can you repipe a house with plaster walls without wrecking them?
Yes. We route through basements, closets and floor cavities wherever we can, use flexible tubing to reduce openings and plan any cuts with you in advance.
Is rusty water dangerous to drink?
Iron itself is mostly a taste and staining issue, but corroded pipe can also harbor sediment. If you are concerned, run the water until it clears and consider having it tested while you plan repairs.
