East Canton Leak Repair: What to Do Until We Get There
K & K Plumbing is based in East Canton, so a leak in town or elsewhere in Osnaburg Township is close to home for us. When water is going where it should not, the first few minutes matter most, and much of that is in your hands. This page walks through what to do before we arrive, then how we contain and repair the leak. We also serve Louisville, Waynesburg and Malvern.
Step One: Stop the Water
Every adult in the house should know where the main shutoff is. In most East Canton homes on public water, it is just inside the basement wall where the line enters, near the meter. On homes with a private well, look near the pressure tank; you can also switch off the breaker for the well pump.
Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe. Then open a faucet on the lowest level to drain the pressure left in the lines. If the leak is at a single fixture, like a toilet or sink, its own small shutoff valve underneath may be enough.
Steps Two Through Five While You Wait
Once the water is off, a few more actions limit the damage and make the repair and any insurance claim go more smoothly.
- Stay safe around electricity. If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, keep clear and shut off power to that area only if you can reach the breaker without standing in water.
- If the leak involves the water heater, turn its gas control to pilot or off, or switch off the breaker for an electric unit.
- Move furniture, rugs, boxes and electronics out of the wet area.
- Soak up standing water with towels or a wet-dry vacuum, and put buckets under drips from the ceiling.
- Take photos and video of the damage and the source before anything is cleaned up.

When the Shutoff Valve Will Not Cooperate
Old gate valves are notorious for seizing after years of sitting open. Forcing one can snap the handle or break the stem, and sometimes the valve turns but never fully closes. If that happens, do not keep wrenching on it. Call us and tell us the valve is stuck; on public water, the curb stop near the street can also shut off the house, though it usually takes a special key.
Once the emergency is over, we strongly recommend replacing a stuck or leaky main valve with a quarter-turn ball valve. They close quickly, rarely seize and make the next emergency much easier.
How We Contain and Repair the Leak
We offer emergency leak containment. Our first job on arrival is confirming the water is stopped and the area is safe, then finding the exact source. After that, our normal process applies: we give you a free estimate, explain the repair options, and you approve the plan. Once the repair is made, we restore water slowly, check everything under full pressure and look for any secondary leaks before we leave.
Many leaks we see around East Canton come from failed supply hoses, old shutoff valves, water heaters, and pipes in exterior walls or crawlspaces that froze. If the leak traces back to aging copper lines or a wider problem, we will explain what we see and let you decide how far to go.

After the Leak
Water that soaked into drywall, flooring or insulation needs to dry properly to prevent mold. Our East Canton restoration service offers cleanup help, plumbing damage inspections and insurance assistance. Members of our plumbing maintenance agreement get priority service and emergency support, along with an annual inspection that includes checking shutoff valves and supply lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the main water shutoff in a typical East Canton home?
Usually in the basement where the water line comes through the wall, near the meter. On a well system, it is near the pressure tank, and you can also turn off the well pump at the breaker.
My main valve is stuck. What should I do?
Do not force it, since the stem can break. Call us, and if possible close the fixture valve nearest the leak. We can replace the old valve with a quarter-turn ball valve afterward.
Should I turn off the water heater if there is a leak?
If the water heater is leaking, or if you have shut off the main for a long time, yes. Set a gas unit to pilot or off, or turn off the breaker for an electric one.
