Old galvanized pipe exposed during a bathroom remodel in an Akron, Ohio home

Akron Bathroom and Kitchen Remodels, Built on Plumbing That Will Last

A lot of Akron's houses went up during the first half of the twentieth century, and many still carry their original plumbing behind newer tile and paint. When you open those walls for a remodel, you have a rare chance to fix what has been quietly aging for decades. K & K Plumbing handles the plumbing for bathroom and kitchen remodels in Akron, about 24 miles from our East Canton shop.

What we usually find when an Akron wall comes down

Older neighborhoods around the city were built when galvanized steel supply pipe and cast iron drains were standard. Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, so a line that looks fine on the outside may have half its opening choked with scale. Cast iron holds up longer, but horizontal runs can crack along the bottom, and joints sealed with lead and oakum can seep.

We also run into decades of patchwork: a copper repair spliced into steel, a drain rerouted by a previous owner, or a vent that was simply left out. None of these are unusual in a house that has been remodeled two or three times since it was built. The point of opening the walls is to sort that out once.

  • Galvanized supply lines with reduced flow
  • Cast iron drain and vent stacks, sometimes with cracked horizontal sections
  • Mixed-metal joints without proper transitions, which corrode faster
  • Missing or undersized vents that cause gurgling drains
  • Old gate-style shutoff valves that no longer close fully

Why a remodel is the right time to replace old lines

Replacing pipe through finished walls means cutting drywall, patching and repainting. During a remodel, that demolition is already done. Running new PEX or copper supply lines and PVC drains to each fixture at this stage costs a fraction of what it would cost to chase a failure later through a brand-new tile surround.

We will tell you honestly what is worth replacing. If the main cast iron stack is sound, we tie new branches into it rather than ripping out the whole column. If the galvanized line feeding the bathroom is already restricted, it should go. Either way, you approve the specifications before anything is cut.

Renovated Akron kitchen with new sink plumbing and faucet

Bathroom and kitchen upgrades that fit older Akron floor plans

Older homes tend to have small bathrooms and closed-off kitchens. That does not mean you are stuck with them. A wall-hung or compact vanity can free up floor space, a curbless shower can make a narrow room feel bigger, and a relocated sink can turn a cramped galley kitchen into a usable workspace.

Many Akron owners also ask about adding a half bath on the first floor or a full bath in the basement. Whether that works depends on where the main drain sits and whether gravity drainage is possible or a pump is needed. Our team handles that kind of new plumbing installation as part of the remodel.

In the kitchen, new fixtures make a big difference. A pull-down sprayer, a dedicated filtered-water tap or a deeper single-bowl sink are common requests, and we can help you pick and install the right faucet for Akron water. If you are converting to gas cooking, we also run the line for a new gas cooktop or range.

What to expect from the estimate to the final test

It starts with a free visit. We look at the existing plumbing from the basement up, ask how you use the space, and explain what the house will and will not allow. Then we write up specifications for you to approve, covering fixture locations, materials and the order of work.

On the job, our rough-in work happens while walls are open, and we come back for fixture installation once tile and cabinets are in. Before we leave, every new line is pressure tested and each fixture gets a quality inspection. Our plumbers keep the work area clean, which matters in an older house where dust travels easily through open stairways and floor registers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my Akron home still has galvanized pipe?

Look where the water line enters the basement. Galvanized pipe is dull gray and has threaded fittings; a magnet will stick to it. Copper is reddish-brown and PEX is plastic tubing, often red, blue or white.

Do I have to replace the cast iron stack when I remodel a bathroom?

Not always. If the stack is solid, we connect new PVC branches to it with proper transition couplings. If it is cracked or badly corroded near the bathroom, replacing that section during the remodel is the smart move.

Can you add a basement bathroom in an older Akron house?

Often, yes. The answer depends on how deep the main sewer line runs. If the new fixtures sit below it, a sewage ejector pump is used to lift waste up to the line. We check this at the estimate.

Is Akron too far for K & K Plumbing?

No. Akron is roughly 24 miles from our shop in East Canton, and Summit County is one of the main areas we serve. You can read the full overview of our remodeling services for more detail.
