Gas Fireplace Inserts, Hookups and Repairs for Akron Homes

Akron has thousands of homes built during the rubber-boom decades, and a lot of them still have the original brick fireplace sitting cold in the living room. K & K Plumbing turns those openings into efficient sealed gas inserts, runs the gas line to them, and repairs gas units that already exist. Our shop is in East Canton, about 24 miles away, and we serve Akron and the rest of Summit County regularly.

Why So Many Akron Fireplaces Are Good Insert Candidates

Older Akron houses were built when a wood fireplace was the centerpiece of the front room. Decades later, many of those fireboxes leak warm air up the chimney all winter, the dampers no longer seal, and the mortar inside has seen better days. Owners stop using them, and the fireplace becomes a cold spot instead of a heat source.

A gas insert solves that without tearing out the masonry. The insert is a steel firebox with a glass front that fits inside the existing opening. Two flexible aluminum liners run up the old flue, one bringing in outside air and one carrying exhaust out, so the unit behaves like a direct-vent fireplace even though it lives inside an old chimney. The result is real heat, a thermostat or remote, and no more drafts.

What We Check Before Recommending an Insert

Not every opening is a match, so the free estimate is spent measuring and looking. We want to know the firebox dimensions, the flue size and condition, and where the nearest gas supply runs in the basement.

  • Width, height and depth of the firebox, including the taper at the back
  • Chimney condition: we ask that it be swept and inspected by a chimney professional first
  • Hearth depth in front of the opening, since inserts project into the room
  • Path for a gas line from the basement up to the hearth
  • Whether an outlet is close by for a blower, or if a millivolt model with no power need makes more sense

Running Gas to a Fireplace in an Older Akron House

Most of these homes already have gas for the furnace and water heater, but the piping was never sized with a fireplace in mind. We add up the BTU ratings of every gas appliance to make sure the meter and main line can carry the extra load. If the existing branch is too small, we tee off closer to the meter with a properly sized run.

The line usually comes up through the basement ceiling and into the side of the hearth or the floor beside the insert. We install an accessible shutoff valve, connect the insert with an approved appliance connector, and leak-test every joint before lighting it. If your service needs more extensive work, our Akron natural gas line team can handle it in the same visit.

Repairing Gas Fireplaces Akron Owners Already Have

Plenty of Akron homes got a gas insert or prefab gas fireplace in the 1990s or 2000s. Those units are now at the age where pilot assemblies, thermocouples and valves start to wear. A pilot that lights but drops out when you let go of the knob almost always points to the thermocouple circuit. A burner that refuses to come on with a healthy pilot often means a weak thermopile or a bad wall switch connection.

We test with a meter instead of swapping parts on a hunch, and we look up the model so replacement components match. When a unit is old enough that parts are no longer made, we will tell you plainly and price a new insert alongside the repair so you can decide.

Bringing a Long-Unused Fireplace Back Into Service

Sometimes buyers of older Akron homes inherit a gas fireplace and have no idea when it last ran. Before lighting it, have it checked. Mice and insects like to nest in burner ports and pilot tubes, vent caps can be blocked, and glass gaskets dry out. We clean the burner and pilot, confirm the vent is clear end to end, and verify gas pressure at the valve. Then we light it and watch a full cycle before calling it ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an old brick fireplace in Akron take a gas insert?

In most cases, yes, provided the firebox is big enough and the chimney is structurally sound. We measure during the free estimate and recommend a chimney sweep and inspection before the liner goes in.

Does a gas insert need a chimney liner?

Nearly all direct-vent inserts use a pair of flexible liners inside the old flue, one for intake and one for exhaust. The insert's manual specifies the liner size and the termination cap.

Is a gas insert the same as a set of gas logs?

No. Logs sit in an open firebox and are mostly decorative. An insert is a sealed heater with its own glass front. If you want the open look of logs, see our gas log page for Akron.

Do you serve Akron for fireplace repairs, or only installations?

Both. We repair pilots, thermocouples, valves and igniters on existing units across Akron. See our main gas fireplace service page for an overview of everything we handle.
