Professional Drain Cleaning vs DIY: What Homeowners Need to Know
Clogged drains are among the most frustrating plumbing issues homeowners face, often striking at the most inconvenient times. Whether it's a kitchen sink…

Clearing a clog fixes today's problem. Keeping drains working for years takes two other things: routine maintenance that stops buildup before it becomes a blockage, and proper repairs when the pipe itself is the reason water will not flow. K & K Plumbing provides both for homes and commercial properties throughout Stark County and the surrounding area.
Most people only think about their drains when one stops. If you have a backup right now, our drain cleaning and unclogging service is the place to start. This page is about what comes before and after that: a schedule that keeps lines clear, and repairs that fix the physical defects causing recurring trouble.
Drain maintenance and repair work typically includes the following.
A drain that clogs once a year from hair or grease is normal. A drain that clogs every few weeks, even after cleaning, usually has something wrong with the pipe. Repeated cleaning will not fix a cracked joint, a collapsed section or a line with the wrong slope.
Watch for these clues that the problem is structural.

In a typical home, drain problems come from a predictable mix: grease in the kitchen line, hair in bathroom drains, lint from the washer and roots in older sewer laterals. Many houses in the county were built when cast iron was standard, and that pipe is now old enough to rust through along the bottom of horizontal runs. Maintenance for a home is usually a matter of periodic cleaning on the problem lines and an eye on aging pipe.
Commercial properties put drains under much heavier use. Restaurants send grease down kitchen lines every day. Office buildings and retail spaces have restrooms used by many people. Multi-unit residential buildings share stacks, so one tenant's habits affect everyone downstream. For these properties, a scheduled maintenance plan is far cheaper than an emergency backup during business hours. We work with owners and property managers to set a cleaning schedule based on the building's actual use.
Every project follows the same three steps. First, you contact us for a free estimate, and we look at the problem lines, ask about the history and find the underlying cause. Second, you approve the work, whether that is a maintenance schedule, a specific repair or both. Third, we complete the work and finish with a quality inspection, running water through the repaired lines to confirm proper flow and no leaks.
We explain what we find in plain terms. If a line just needs cleaning, we say so. If a section needs replacement, we show you why. Our plumbers are licensed, insured and bonded, and we keep the work area clean.

The right repair depends on the pipe and the defect. A leaking P-trap or slip joint is a quick replacement with new PVC or brass parts. A cracked section of cast iron can often be cut out and replaced with PVC using approved transition couplings, leaving the sound pipe on either side in place. When a cast iron stack has deteriorated along much of its length, replacing the full run may be more economical than patching.
Sagging horizontal lines need to be re-supported or re-pitched so water carries solids along rather than leaving them behind. Blocked vents, often from leaves, nests or ice at the roof, cause slow drains and gurgling and need to be cleared. Floor drains and cleanouts with broken covers or missing traps can let sewer gas into a basement and should be repaired.
Before major work, a plumbing inspection can help identify the condition of the whole system so repairs are planned in the right order.
Simple habits do most of the work. Use strainers in sinks and tubs. Wipe grease from pans into the trash instead of the sink. Run plenty of water with the garbage disposal. Never flush wipes, even if the package says flushable. Pour water into rarely used floor drains every month or two so the trap does not dry out and let sewer gas in.
Avoid harsh chemical drain openers, which can damage older pipes and do not remove the underlying buildup. If your basement relies on a sump pump, test it in spring and fall along with your floor drains. Homeowners who want a yearly checkup can join our Residential Plumbing Maintenance Agreement, which includes an annual inspection and priority service, or schedule individual visits through our plumbing maintenance service.

Most homes do not need routine drain cleaning unless a line has a history of trouble. Kitchen lines in busy households and main lines with root problems may benefit from cleaning every year or two. Restaurants and heavy-use commercial properties often need more frequent service.
Cleaning removes buildup or a blockage from the inside of a pipe. Repair fixes the pipe itself, such as a crack, a leaking joint, a sagging section or a broken trap.
Repeated clogs in the same spot usually mean a physical defect, such as a bellied section, rough corroded cast iron, roots entering a joint or a blocked vent. Fixing that defect stops the cycle.
Often, yes. A damaged section can be cut out and replaced with PVC using transition couplings. If the pipe is deteriorated over a long stretch, a larger replacement may make more sense.
Most often the trap has dried out, letting sewer gas through. Pouring water into the drain usually fixes it. If the smell persists, the trap, cleanout cover or vent may need repair.
An affordable way to keep your plumbing in top shape, cut down on surprise repairs and extend the life of your equipment.
