Leaking garbage disposal under a kitchen sink in Brewster, Ohio

Disposal Trouble in Brewster? What to Do Now and How We Fix It

When a disposal starts leaking or locks up in the middle of dinner, the first few minutes matter more than anything else. This page walks Brewster homeowners through what to do right away, then explains how K & K Plumbing repairs or replaces the unit. Brewster is about 17 miles from our East Canton shop, and we serve the village along with Navarre, Beach City and the surrounding countryside.

First Steps When Water Appears Under the Sink

Water on the cabinet floor can come from several places, and it can soak into particleboard quickly. Take these steps before you call:

  • Stop running water in the sink and stop the dishwasher if it is mid-cycle
  • Turn off power to the disposal at the switch, and unplug it or flip the breaker if you can reach it
  • Empty the cabinet and set a shallow pan or towels under the unit
  • Dry the outside of the disposal and its connections with a towel
  • Run a small amount of water and watch to see where the first drop appears

Reading the leak location

A drip at the top where the disposal meets the sink usually means the flange seal or mounting ring has loosened. A drip from the side pipe points to the discharge tube gasket. Water at the small inlet near the top often comes from the dishwasher hose. Water from the very bottom of the unit generally means the internal seal has failed, and the disposal will need to be replaced.

When the Disposal Hums or Stops

If the motor hums but nothing turns, switch it off right away. Running a jammed motor heats it up and trips the overload. With the power off, look into the chamber with a flashlight and use tongs, never your hand, to pull out anything you can see, such as a bottle cap, a bone or a fruit pit.

Most units have a hex socket on the bottom center. Turning it back and forth with the matching wrench can free the plates. Wait several minutes for the motor to cool, then press the red reset button and try again. If it still hums, or if it runs but makes a loud metallic grind, leave it off until we can look at it.

Living Without the Disposal for a Few Days

A broken disposal does not have to shut down your kitchen. As long as it is not leaking, you can usually use the other side of a double sink and run the dishwasher. Avoid putting food scraps down either drain until the unit is fixed.

If the disposal is leaking from its body, keep the sink above it out of use. Water that goes down that drain will end up in the cabinet. Many leaks are slow enough to manage with a pan for a short time, but they should not be ignored.

How We Repair or Replace It

When we arrive, we confirm where the leak or failure is coming from and explain what it will take to fix. Loose mounts, worn gaskets and dishwasher connections are usually simple repairs. A unit that leaks from inside the housing, has a seized motor or is heavily corroded is better replaced.

For a replacement, we remove the old unit, clean and reseal the sink flange, install the new disposal, and reconnect the trap and dishwasher. Then we run the disposal and the dishwasher together and check every joint for drips before we leave. If the drain line itself is clogged, our Brewster drain clearing service can take care of it on the same trip.

Village Homes and Rural Properties

Brewster's in-town homes are connected to village sewer, while many properties out in the surrounding townships rely on septic systems. If you are on septic, a disposal should be used sparingly, and a finer-grinding unit helps. We will ask about your system when recommending a replacement. You can read more about unit sizes and septic considerations on our Stark County disposal page.

If your kitchen faucet is also dripping or the sprayer leaks under the counter, mention it when you call. Our Brewster faucet repair can be handled in the same visit. Office hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday mornings, and emergency service is available for active leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my disposal is leaking under the sink?

Stop using the sink and dishwasher, turn off power to the disposal, clear the cabinet and put a pan underneath. Then call us with a description of where the water seems to be coming from.

Is it safe to use the sink with a broken disposal?

If the disposal is not leaking, you can usually use the sink lightly without food scraps. If it leaks from the housing, keep that side of the sink out of use until it is repaired.

How do I unjam a garbage disposal safely?

Turn off the power first. Remove visible objects with tongs, then turn the hex socket on the bottom of the unit with the matching wrench to free the plates. Let the motor cool and press the reset button before trying again.

Can I bypass a broken disposal until it is replaced?

In some cases we can temporarily connect the sink drain without the disposal, but it is usually simpler to replace the unit. We can talk through the options when we see your setup.
