Garbage Disposal Repair and Replacement in North Canton Kitchens

North Canton has a lot of solidly built homes from the middle of the last century, along with newer neighborhoods closer to Green and the edges of the city. Kitchens in both have seen several rounds of updates, and the disposal under the sink may be any age. K & K Plumbing repairs and replaces disposals in North Canton, about 9 miles from our East Canton shop.

What We Find Under Older North Canton Sinks

In many mid-century kitchens, the current disposal is not the first one, and the parts around it have been through several changes. Some of the conditions we run into most often:

  • Mounting rings and sink flanges with heavy corrosion, sometimes rusted together
  • Disposals wired directly into a junction box rather than plugged into an outlet
  • Traps built from mismatched pieces after earlier replacements
  • Steel sinks that have thinned or flexed around the drain opening
  • Original wall drains in metal pipe that have narrowed with age

Dealing With Corroded Mounts and Flanges

The mounting ring holds the disposal to the sink, and the flange is the metal ring you see in the sink drain opening. When those parts corrode, the seal fails and water begins to seep around the top of the unit. In bad cases, the old disposal will not twist off its mount at all and has to be cut free.

When we replace a disposal on a corroded mount, we remove the old flange completely, clean the sink opening and install a fresh flange and mount with new sealant. That avoids reusing tired parts that would leak again under the new unit.

Hardwired Units and Electrical Coordination

Some older disposals were wired directly to the house circuit rather than plugged into an outlet. That is still a valid way to connect one, but it affects how a replacement goes. If the new unit can be connected the same way and the wiring is in good shape, the swap is straightforward.

If the wiring is damaged, too short or not up to the job, an electrician may need to make changes before we hang the new disposal. We will let you know ahead of time so it can be planned. Many homeowners take the opportunity to have a switched outlet installed under the sink, which makes future replacements simpler.

Why Old Disposals Get Loud

A disposal that has grown noisier over the years usually has worn bearings, loose mounting hardware or something lodged in the chamber. Older units also tend to have less sound insulation to start with. If the noise is a rattle that stops after you clear the chamber, the unit may be fine. A grinding or squealing motor means it is wearing out.

A modern replacement with insulation and a 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower motor is noticeably quieter in most kitchens, and it handles everyday scraps more easily.

Repairs, Drains and Remodels

Not every call ends in a replacement. We fix flange leaks, discharge tube drips, dishwasher hose issues and jams. If the disposal is working but the sink drains slowly, the problem is in the line, and our North Canton drain cleaning service can clear it.

Thinking about a bigger update? Our North Canton kitchen remodeling plumbing can handle a new sink, faucet and disposal together. We also serve Canton, Green, Hartville, Louisville and Massillon. Frequently Asked Questions

My disposal is wired directly. Can it be replaced with a plug-in unit?

Often, yes, but it requires an outlet under the sink. If there is not one, an electrician will need to install it before we connect the new disposal.

What does a corroded mounting ring mean?

It means the seal between the disposal and the sink is likely failing. We remove the old flange and mount and install new ones with the replacement unit.

Why is my old disposal so loud?

Worn bearings, loose mounting hardware or debris in the chamber are common causes. If clearing the chamber does not quiet it, the motor is probably wearing out.

Can you replace a disposal without replacing the sink?

Yes, in most cases. We only suggest replacing the sink if it is cracked or too thin to support the new unit and seal properly.
