Replacing a Gas Cooktop in Louisville: What Happens on Install Day

Louisville sits just about four miles from our East Canton shop, so many of our cooktop jobs here are straightforward replacements for neighbors whose old unit has worn out. If you have never had a built-in gas cooktop replaced before, here is exactly what to expect, from the prep you can do ahead of time to the last flame check.

Before We Arrive

A little preparation keeps install day short. The most important piece is having the right cooktop on hand. Compare the new model's cutout dimensions with your existing countertop opening before you buy, and keep the installation manual, which has the clearances, regulator details and electrical requirements we follow.

  • Empty the base cabinet under the cooktop and the drawers right below it
  • Have the new cooktop, its manual and any parts that came in the box on site
  • Confirm the cooktop is set up for your fuel, or have the LP kit if you use propane
  • Make sure the outlet inside the cabinet works
  • Clear a path from the door to the kitchen for carrying the old unit out
  • Let us know if the countertop has been changed since the old cooktop went in

Step by Step on Install Day

We start by turning off the cabinet shutoff and checking that it actually holds. If it is old or will not fully close, we replace it. Then we disconnect the old connector, unplug the unit, release any clips or brackets and lift the old cooktop out of the counter.

With the opening clear, we check the cutout against the new unit, inspect the stub and look at where the new cooktop's gas inlet will land. The manufacturer's pressure regulator is installed at the inlet if it is not already attached, and we connect a new listed flexible connector. We never reuse the old one. The cooktop is set into the counter, secured with its brackets and plugged in.

Testing and Adjusting the New Burners

Once the gas is back on, we leak-test every fitting we touched, plus the valve and connector. Then we light each burner on high and on its lowest setting. We look for a steady blue flame, even ignition around the burner, and a simmer flame that does not go out when a nearby burner is turned on or off. Where the manual calls for a low-flame adjustment, we make it.

Before leaving, we show you where the shutoff is and how it operates, clean up the work area and haul the old unit out if you would like. The job wraps with a quality inspection.

When a Simple Swap Turns Into More

Sometimes install day reveals something that needs attention: a cutout that will not fit the new model, an old brass connector, a corroded stub or a line that was never properly supported. We stop and explain the options before doing anything beyond the agreed scope. Moving the cooktop to a new location is a bigger project, best handled with our Louisville kitchen remodeling service, and longer piping changes fall under gas line repair in Louisville.

If the old cooktop just needs a gas-side fix rather than replacement, such as a leak at a fitting or weak burners from a kinked line, we handle that too. For a freestanding option, see our gas stove service in Louisville.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a gas cooktop replacement take?

A straight swap into a matching cutout with a sound stub is usually a modest job. Valve replacement, cutout changes or piping repairs add time, and we explain any of those before starting.

What should I do before you arrive?

Empty the cabinet under the cooktop, have the new unit and its manual on site, confirm the fuel setup and make sure the cabinet outlet works.

Will you take the old cooktop away?

We can remove it from the counter and carry it out for you. Just let us know when you schedule.

What do you test after connecting the new cooktop?

We leak-test every fitting, the valve and the connector, then light each burner on high and low to confirm steady flame and reliable simmer.
