Check the manufacturer's installation requirements for clearances below the unit, and plan knee space carefully so the burner box and gas connection stay protected.

Overhead clearance matters too. Pairing the cooktop with a wall oven mounted at waist height removes the need to bend down to a low oven door, a change many people appreciate in the long run.

Make the Shutoff Easy to Reach

The gas shutoff for a cooktop usually sits deep in the base cabinet. That location may satisfy the basic requirement while still being hard to reach for someone with limited mobility. When we install a new cooktop, we can position the valve toward the front of the cabinet or in a spot that does not require kneeling behind a drawer stack, while keeping it protected from stored items.

We also replace old connectors and stiff valves while the cooktop is out. A valve that takes two hands and a wrench to turn is not much help in an urgent moment.
