Getting Gas to the Fireplace in Canal Fulton Homes

In a lot of Canal Fulton houses, the fireplace and the gas meter are about as far apart as they can be. Older homes near the historic downtown, farmhouses in the surrounding township and newer houses with additions all present their own routing puzzles. K & K Plumbing, about 18 miles from our East Canton shop, specializes in the part of a gas log installation that most people never think about: getting the fuel there safely.

Why the Line Is the Hard Part

Setting logs on a grate takes minutes. Getting gas from the meter or tank to the inside of a brick firebox can take most of the day. The pipe has to be sized for the length of the run and the demand of every appliance on it, routed where it is protected from damage, and brought through masonry in a way that will not crack the brick or let the pipe rub.

A line that is too small for its length starves the burner when the furnace kicks on, which shows up as a lazy, sooty flame or a pilot that drops out. A line that is poorly supported or run through a wall without a sleeve can corrode or be damaged over time.

Common Routes in Canal Fulton Houses

We choose the route that is shortest, safest and easiest to service later, and we explain the trade-offs before you approve the plan.

Full basement below the hearth

The easiest case. We branch off the main line in the basement, run along the joists and come up through the subfloor right next to the hearth, then into the side or floor of the firebox.

Crawlspace or partial basement

Some older homes and additions have a crawlspace under the room with the fireplace. We run the pipe through the crawlspace with proper supports, keeping it off the ground and away from areas that hold moisture.

Exterior chimney on a slab room

When there is no space below, the line may run along the outside of the house and enter through the chimney base. Exterior pipe is coated or painted, supported and kept clear of mowing and snow removal.

Sizing the Pipe for Added Load

Every gas appliance has an input listed on its label in BTUs per hour. A vented log set can draw as much as some furnaces, while vent-free sets are smaller. We add the new burner to the existing furnace, water heater, range and dryer, then check that the meter, regulator and main piping can feed them all at once.

If the existing trunk is undersized, we may need to upsize a section rather than simply tapping into the nearest pipe. Our Canal Fulton natural gas line service handles that, and properties on a tank can be served by our propane line installers.

  • Black iron pipe for most interior runs
  • Approved flexible gas tubing where the layout calls for it, properly bonded
  • A sleeve through masonry and a sealed opening
  • An accessible manual shutoff ahead of the fireplace

Finishing at the Firebox

Once the gas reaches the hearth, a key valve with a trim plate is set beside the opening for match-lit sets, or a control valve is mounted under the burner for safety-pilot sets. Vented installations get a damper clamp so the flue always has an opening. Then the burner pan, grate, embers and logs are placed per the diagram and the system is leak-tested before it is lit.

Older Canal Fulton fireplaces can be shallower than modern ones, so we check log set depth carefully against your firebox during the estimate.

Planning Ahead for Other Gas Projects

If you are thinking about a gas range, a dryer or an outdoor grill line in the next few years, tell us during the estimate. It may make sense to size the new branch for those future loads now rather than opening walls twice. Our Stark County gas log overview covers log and burner choices in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tap into the gas line for my water heater to feed the fireplace?

Sometimes, but only if that pipe is large enough for both appliances at the length involved. We check the sizing before using any existing branch.

Will the gas line be visible in my living room?

Usually only the key valve and its trim plate show. The pipe enters the firebox from the side or floor and stays hidden behind the logs.

Is it a problem if my gas meter is on the opposite end of the house?

Not a problem, just a longer run. Longer runs may need a larger pipe size to deliver full pressure at the fireplace.

Do exterior gas lines freeze in winter?

Natural gas lines do not freeze the way water lines do, but the pipe must be protected from physical damage and corrosion. Propane systems can see pressure drop in deep cold, which is a tank and regulator issue we can help you evaluate.
