Fixing Gas Line Issues Found During Massillon Home Inspections
Massillon has a large stock of older homes, and when one of them goes on the market, the home inspection often turns up gas piping concerns. K & K Plumbing handles gas line repair in Massillon for buyers, sellers and agents working against a closing date, as well as everyday installs and leak repairs. Our East Canton shop is about 13 miles east.
What Inspectors Commonly Flag
Home inspectors are not gas fitters, so their reports usually recommend evaluation by a licensed professional. These are the items we see on Massillon inspection reports most often:
- Missing sediment trap (drip leg) at the furnace or water heater
- No shutoff valve at an appliance, or an old valve that will not turn
- Uncoated brass flexible connectors on the range or dryer
- Rust, scaling or pitting on basement pipe
- Pipe that is unsupported or hung by wire
- Capped or open abandoned lines
- A detected gas odor or a reading on a combustible gas detector
- CSST that does not appear to be bonded
How We Handle an Inspection Report
Send us the relevant pages of the report. We visit, confirm each item, and give you a written scope that addresses them individually. Some items are minor, like adding a drip leg. Others, like a confirmed leak, take priority. We do not pad the list; if something an inspector flagged turns out to be fine, we will say so.
Every repair ends with a pressure test, and we can provide a summary of the work for your agent and the other party. Because closings run on deadlines, we try to schedule inspection repairs promptly and will tell you upfront how soon we can do the work.

Rust on Gas Pipe: When It Matters
Light surface rust on black iron pipe is common in basements and is usually cosmetic. It can be cleaned and painted. Heavy scaling, flaking or pitting is different. It means the wall of the pipe is losing thickness, and that section should be replaced. Pipe near floor drains, sump pits, laundry tubs and exterior walls is where we see the worst corrosion in Massillon's older basements.
A quick test is to look at the pipe in good light and press gently on any scaly area with a screwdriver handle. If flakes come off easily and you can see craters underneath, call us. Please do not scrape or sand gas pipe aggressively yourself; it can remove more metal than the corrosion already has.
For Sellers: Getting Ahead of It
If you are planning to list, a pre-sale look at your gas piping can head off surprises. Replacing an old brass connector, adding a missing shutoff or swapping a rusted section is far less stressful before an offer than in the middle of negotiations. While we are there, we can check the gas water heater and its venting, another item that often lands on inspection reports.

Everyday Gas Work in Massillon
Outside of real estate deals, we install new lines for ranges, dryers and fireplaces, repair leaks, and upgrade piping for higher-demand appliances. Homes outside town on tank gas can use our Massillon propane line service. For a closer look at our methods, see the gas line installation and repair overview. Call 330-875-8003 for a free estimate. Frequently Asked Questions
What gas issues do home inspectors commonly flag?
Missing drip legs and shutoffs, old brass connectors, rusted or unsupported pipe, abandoned lines, unbonded CSST, and detected gas odors are the most common. Inspectors usually recommend a licensed professional evaluate them.
Can you fix inspection items before closing?
In many cases, yes. Send us the report, and we will confirm the items, provide a scope and tell you how soon we can complete the work. We test the system afterward and can summarize the repairs.
Who pays for gas line repairs in a home sale?
That is negotiated between buyer and seller, usually with their agents. We provide a clear scope so both sides know what is involved, and we work for whichever party hires us.
Is surface rust on a gas pipe a problem?
Light surface rust is usually cosmetic and can be cleaned and painted. Flaking, scaling or pitting means the pipe wall is thinning, and that section should be replaced.
