Fixing Yellow Flames, Soot and Combustion Problems on Massillon Gas Ranges
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue with a crisp shape. When the flame turns yellow, floppy or smoky, the range is burning incompletely, and that usually leaves soot behind and can produce carbon monoxide. Massillon homeowners call K & K Plumbing to track down the cause, correct it, and confirm the range is burning cleanly. Massillon is about 13 miles west of our East Canton shop.
What a Good Flame Looks Like
On the cooktop and in the oven, look for a steady blue flame with a slightly darker inner cone. A few orange flecks that come and go are normal; they are dust or particles in the air burning off, especially when a humidifier is running or after the range sits unused. A flame that is mostly yellow, tall and wavering, or that leaves black marks on pans, is a problem.
Oven flames are harder to see, so many people only notice the side effects: a dark film on the oven ceiling, soot on the wall behind the range, a smell like something burning that is not food, or a carbon monoxide alarm that sounds when the oven has been on for a while.
Common Causes We Find in Massillon Kitchens
Massillon has a lot of older homes and long-lived ranges, and the causes of poor combustion are usually one of a handful:
- Wrong orifices for the fuel: a range set up for natural gas running on propane, or one converted and later moved
- Misadjusted air shutter on the bake or broil burner, starving the flame of air
- Burner ports clogged with grease, spills or debris
- Burner caps or oven burner covers sitting crooked after cleaning
- Aluminum foil on the oven floor blocking airflow around the bake burner
- A regulator problem delivering the wrong pressure to the burners

How We Correct It
We start by confirming what fuel the house uses and what the range is set for. Next, we inspect the bake and broil burners, clean ports, check orifice sizes and adjust air shutters until the flame burns blue and stable. On the cooktop, we look at each burner head and cap. Where it applies, we test the regulator setting. We also check the oven vent path, which in many ranges exits at the back of the cooktop and should never be covered with pans or foil.
If the range is old and parts are no longer available, or the burners are cracked or badly corroded, we will tell you replacement may be the better route. A new range from us includes a new connector, an accessible shutoff valve, a leak test, the anti-tip bracket and a full lighting check.
Carbon Monoxide and Your Range
A properly adjusted gas range produces very little carbon monoxide, but an out-of-adjustment one can produce more, especially when the oven runs for long periods. Never use a gas oven or burners to heat the home. Run the range hood when cooking, and keep working CO alarms on every level of the house. If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 or your gas utility.
A range that soots up repeatedly is telling you something. Cleaning the soot without fixing the cause only buys a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the flame in my gas oven yellow?
Usually the burner is not getting enough air or is getting too much gas for its setup. Common causes are a misadjusted air shutter, clogged ports, foil blocking airflow, or orifices that do not match your fuel.
Is soot from a gas range dangerous?
Soot signals incomplete combustion, which can also produce carbon monoxide. Stop relying on the range for long cooking sessions and have it checked and adjusted.
Can a gas range set off a carbon monoxide alarm?
Yes, particularly a poorly adjusted oven running for a long time in a closed kitchen. If your alarm sounds, get outside and call 911 or the gas utility.
Should I see some orange in the flame?
Occasional orange flickers from dust are normal. A flame that is steadily yellow or orange, tall and lazy is not.
