Preventing Clogs with Drain Strainers
The cheapest drain repair is the one you never need. A simple drain strainer catches hair, food scraps and debris at the surface, where you can throw it away, instead of letting it build into a clog deep in the pipe.
What Usually Clogs Household Drains
In bathrooms, the main culprit is hair binding together with soap scum. In kitchens, it is grease and food particles: rice, coffee grounds, eggshells and vegetable peels. Small objects such as bottle caps, jewelry and kids' toys also find their way into tubs and sinks. A strainer blocks most of this at the drain opening.
Choosing the Right Strainer
Stainless steel resists rust and lasts longest. Silicone is easy to clean and flexible. Avoid strainers so fine that they slow drainage noticeably.
Kitchen sinks
A deep basket strainer with fine holes catches food scraps while letting water through. If you have a garbage disposal, use a mesh or rubber splash guard and still keep fats and fibrous foods out of the drain.
Tubs and showers
Hair catchers come as flat mesh covers, dome-shaped stainless screens, and silicone mats that sit over the drain. Some fit inside the drain body under the stopper. Pick one that matches your drain size and does not trap water around your feet.
Bathroom sinks
Small mesh inserts or a pop-up stopper with a built-in catch work well. Shaving whiskers and toothpaste residue are the usual buildup here.

A Simple Strainer Routine
Strainers only help if they are kept clean. A clogged strainer can cause overflow just as easily as a clogged pipe.
- Empty kitchen strainers into the trash after doing dishes, not into the sink or disposal.
- Pull hair from shower and tub catchers after each use or at least every few days.
- Once a week, scrub strainers with warm soapy water and an old toothbrush to remove slime.
- Check the rubber seal on basket strainers; a worn seal lets debris slip past the edges.
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing so less fat reaches the drain at all.
Safety and Practical Notes
Wear gloves when removing debris from a drain body, as buildup can harbor bacteria. Do not use chemical drain openers with a strainer in place, and avoid them in general: they can damage older pipes and splash back on skin and eyes. If a strainer will not lift out because the drain is backed up, leave it and call for help rather than prying.
When a Strainer Is Not Enough
Strainers prevent new clogs; they do not clear existing ones. Call a plumber if water drains slowly even with a clean strainer, you hear gurgling from nearby fixtures, or more than one drain is slow at the same time. Those signs point to buildup further down the line. Our drain cleaning service clears the line properly, and if odors are the main problem, try our guide on inspecting your P-trap first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a strainer stop all clogs?
No, but it removes the biggest cause in bathrooms (hair) and a major one in kitchens (food scraps). Grease still needs to stay out of the drain, since it passes through strainers as a liquid and hardens in the pipe.
Do I need a strainer if I have a garbage disposal?
It still helps. Disposals handle soft food waste, but grease, fibrous peels, pasta and coffee grounds can still clog the line beyond the disposal.
My shower drains slowly even with a hair catcher. Why?
Hair that went down before the catcher was installed may still be in the drain or trap. A plumber can clear the existing buildup, and the strainer will help keep it from returning.
