Alliance Propane Piping for Generators and Whole-House Loads
Alliance sits in northeastern Stark County, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop, and the farmland and township roads around it are full of homes that rely on propane. K & K Plumbing handles propane gas line work in Alliance with a special focus on the question we hear most often: can my system handle one more big appliance?
Adding a Standby Generator to a Propane System
Winter storms and summer wind knock out power across rural Stark County, and a propane-fired standby generator is a popular answer. The generator itself is usually set by an electrician or dealer, but the gas supply is a plumbing job, and it is the part most likely to be undersized.
A whole-house generator can draw more fuel than a furnace and water heater combined. If it is tied into an existing branch line meant for a dryer or range, it can starve under load and shut down right when you need it. We figure out the generator's fuel demand at full output, add it to everything else in the house, and run a dedicated line of the correct diameter with its own shutoff and sediment trap.
- Dedicated supply line sized for the generator's full-load demand
- Regulator capacity checked or upgraded for the added load
- Outdoor-grade piping and supports at the generator pad
- Pressure test before the dealer starts the unit
When Everything Runs at Once
The real test of a propane system comes on a cold night when the furnace, water heater, range and generator all fire together. Pipe that was sized decades ago for a furnace and a cookstove often cannot keep up. The symptoms are subtle at first: a burner that flickers when the furnace kicks on, or a water heater that takes longer to recover.
We measure the total connected load in BTUs, the length of each run, and the regulator setup. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a higher-capacity second-stage regulator. Other times the main trunk line needs to be upsized so the far end of the house gets full pressure.

Barns, Shops and Detached Garages
Properties outside town toward Sebring, Beloit and Damascus often have a pole barn or workshop that the owner wants to heat. A propane unit heater makes a shop usable through an Ohio winter, but getting fuel there means either a second tank or a branch off the main system.
Branching off the house tank is often cleaner. We run a buried polyethylene line with tracer wire to the outbuilding, install a riser and regulator at the wall, and pipe the heater with an accessible shutoff. If the run is long, we size the line so the shop heater does not rob pressure from the house.
Repairs on Older Propane Lines
Some older Alliance-area properties still have bare steel or copper yard lines buried long ago. Steel rusts from the outside in, and copper can be damaged by shifting soil or a careless shovel. If your tank seems to be draining faster than it should, a slow underground leak is a real possibility.
We isolate sections of the system and pressure test each one to locate the loss. A failing buried line is usually replaced rather than patched, and modern polyethylene gas pipe does not corrode the way the old materials did.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tie a generator into the line that feeds my dryer?
Usually not. A standby generator typically needs far more fuel than a dryer branch can deliver. We run a dedicated line sized for the generator's full-load demand so it does not starve under load.
Will a generator affect my furnace and water heater?
It can if the yard line or regulator is undersized. We calculate the combined load of every appliance plus the generator and upgrade the trunk line or regulator if needed so all of them get full pressure.
Do I need a bigger tank for a generator?
Tank size is a conversation to have with your propane supplier, since it affects how long the generator can run between fills. We coordinate with them so the piping and regulators match whatever tank is set.
How deep do you bury a propane line to a barn?
We bury the line to the depth required for the pipe and location, lay tracer wire with it, and use a transition riser where it comes up at the building. Before any digging, utilities are marked through Ohio's 811 system.
