Gas Range Installation and Repair for Stark County Kitchens
A gas range combines two appliances in one box: burners on top and an oven and broiler below, all fed by a single gas connection. K & K Plumbing sets new freestanding and slide-in ranges, replaces worn connectors and shutoff valves, diagnoses ovens that will not heat, and handles natural gas to propane conversions for homes and businesses throughout Stark County and the surrounding area.
Sliding a range into place is the easy part. The work that keeps your household safe happens behind it, in the six inches most people never see once the appliance is pushed back against the wall. A complete installation from our crew covers the supply side, the appliance itself and the checks that confirm everything is tight and burning correctly.
We also look at the gas piping that feeds the kitchen. If the existing stub is undersized for a larger range, sits where it will collide with the back of the new unit, or ends in a corroded fitting, we tell you before anything is connected. When new piping is needed, our gas line installation team handles that as part of the same visit plan.
A new, appliance-listed flexible connector sized for the range, never a reused one
An accessible quarter-turn shutoff valve where you can actually reach it
Connection to the range's built-in pressure regulator and confirmation of the correct fuel setting
Leak testing of every joint with a bubble solution or electronic detector
Burner, oven and broiler lighting checks with flame inspection
Anti-tip bracket installation and leveling so the range sits flat and secure
Confirmation that the 120-volt outlet for igniters and controls is in place and reachable
Signs Your Range Needs Repair or a Connection Upgrade
Gas ranges rarely fail all at once. They usually send small signals first, and catching those early is cheaper and safer than waiting for a burner or oven to stop working entirely. Any smell of gas is the exception: that calls for leaving the house and calling your gas utility or 911 from outside before calling us.
Oven complaints are the most common repair calls we hear. In most modern ranges, a glow-bar igniter must heat up enough to open the oven's gas valve. As that igniter weakens with age, the oven takes longer and longer to light, and eventually it never lights at all while the igniter still glows. That is a parts problem, not a gas supply problem, but it is easy to confuse the two.
Oven or broiler takes several minutes to ignite, or glows without lighting
Yellow, lazy or noisy flames instead of steady blue ones
Soot marks on pans, the oven ceiling or the wall behind the range
A faint gas odor near the back of the range after it has been moved
Baked goods that burn on the bottom or never brown, suggesting temperature trouble
A connector that is kinked, corroded, uncoated brass or older than the appliance
A range that rocks forward when the oven door is opened, meaning no anti-tip bracket
Residential and Commercial Range Work
In homes, most of our range calls involve replacing an older freestanding model, upgrading to a slide-in that changes how the counters meet the appliance, or switching a kitchen from an electric range to gas. Older houses around the county often have a gas stub in the wrong place, a valve buried behind the range, or a connector that predates current appliance standards. Newer homes are more predictable but sometimes have a capped stub that was never tested.
Commercial kitchens bring different demands. Restaurant and institutional ranges draw more gas, often sit on casters, and are typically connected with a commercial-grade quick-disconnect hose and a restraining cable so the unit can be pulled out for cleaning without straining the gas line. We work with owners and property managers to schedule this work around service hours and to keep the gas piping sized for every appliance on the line, not just the range.
Our Process From Estimate to First Bake
Every job follows the same three steps. First, you reach out for a free estimate and we look at the range, the gas supply, the space and any electrical needs. Second, you approve the project specifications, so the scope and the parts are clear before work starts. Third, we complete the work and run a quality inspection that includes leak testing and a full lighting check of every burner, the oven and the broiler.
On installation day we shut off the gas at the range valve or the meter, remove and cap the old connection if there is one, set the new valve and connector, and test before the range is pushed into place. Before we leave, we show you where the shutoff is and how to use it.
Options: Freestanding, Slide-In, Dual-Fuel and Fuel Conversions
Freestanding ranges have finished sides and a raised backguard with the controls, so they can stand alone or between cabinets. Slide-in ranges have front controls and a slightly overlapping cooktop that rests on the counter edge, giving a built-in look but requiring a more precise cabinet opening and gas stub location. Dual-fuel models pair a gas cooktop with an electric oven and need both a gas connection and a 240-volt circuit, so we coordinate with your electrician on those.
Most ranges ship set up for natural gas. Homes on propane need the manufacturer's conversion kit, which swaps burner and oven orifices and resets the appliance regulator. This is not a step to guess at: the wrong orifices can produce tall, sooty flames or burners that barely light. Our propane gas line service covers the supply side when a tank or new line is part of the project.
Clearances matter too. Each range lists required distances to side walls, overhead cabinets and the range hood in its installation manual. We check those dimensions on site, particularly in remodels where cabinets have been moved.
Preparing for Installation and Keeping Your Range Healthy
Before we arrive, clear a path from the door to the kitchen and empty the area in front of the old range. Have the new range's installation manual and any conversion kit handy, and confirm the delivery date if a retailer is bringing the unit. If you are planning a larger kitchen update, our kitchen remodeling crew can plan the gas, plumbing and range location together.
Day to day, keep burner ports clear, wipe spills before they bake onto the oven floor, and avoid lining the oven bottom with foil, which can block airflow and damage the finish. Have the range looked at if you notice flame changes, soot or slow ignition, and replace the connector any time the range is swapped or the old one shows damage. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm on each level of the home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a plumber to hook up a gas range?
Gas connections should be made by someone qualified in gas fitting who leak-tests the work. Many retailers will not connect gas appliances at all. We handle the valve, connector, leak test and lighting check, and we confirm the range is set for your fuel type.
Can I reuse the old gas connector on a new range?
We do not recommend it. Flexible connectors are designed to be installed once, and bending them again during a move can stress the tubing. A new connector sized for the appliance is inexpensive insurance.
Why does my gas oven take so long to preheat?
The most common cause is a weak glow-bar igniter that no longer draws enough current to open the oven gas valve quickly. Less often, a supply restriction or faulty safety valve is to blame. We test to find out which.
Can a natural gas range be converted to propane?
Most can, using the manufacturer's conversion kit to change orifices and reset the regulator. Some ranges require specific parts ordered separately, so check the model before buying if you are on propane.
What is an anti-tip bracket and does my range need one?
It is a small metal bracket fastened to the floor or wall that catches the range's rear leg so the appliance cannot tip forward when weight is placed on an open oven door. Manufacturers include one for a reason, and we install it with every range we set.
