Replacing Builder-Grade Garbage Disposals in Green Homes
Green has been one of the faster-growing communities in the area, and many of its neighborhoods were built in the last few decades. A lot of those homes came with the smallest, simplest disposal the builder could install, and those units are now reaching the end of their run. K & K Plumbing replaces and repairs disposals throughout Green, about 15 miles from our East Canton shop, and helps homeowners choose something better the second time around.
Why Builder Units Give Out
When a house is built, the disposal is one of many line items, and it is often the most basic model available. Those units typically have small motors, galvanized grinding parts and little sound insulation. They work fine at first but are more prone to jamming, corroding inside and leaking from the housing as they age.
If your home was built in the area's growth years and still has its original disposal, it has likely served longer than the manufacturer intended. Signs it is wearing out include louder grinding, more frequent jams, rust on the bottom of the housing and slow drainage after use.
Picking the Second Disposal
A replacement is a chance to buy a unit you actually like. For most Green households, these are the things worth weighing:
- Horsepower: moving from 1/3 to 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower reduces jams noticeably
- Noise: insulated models make open-concept kitchens more pleasant
- Grinding parts: stainless components resist the corrosion that ended the first unit
- Mounting style: matching the existing mount can simplify the swap
- Size: taller units need enough room above the trap to drain properly
Same mount or new mount?
Some brands use a standard mounting ring that fits many of their models, which can make a replacement quicker. If the new unit uses a different system, we install a new mount and reseal the sink flange. Either way, we check the flange seal, since old putty dries out with age.

Installation Issues We Find in Newer Homes
Newer construction usually means clean PVC drains, but builder installs are done quickly, and we sometimes find shortcuts. Common ones include a dishwasher hose without a high loop, a trap that relies on long flexible connectors, and slip joints that were only hand tight. A gurgling sink while the disposal runs can point to a venting problem, which we can look into while we are there.
When we replace the unit, we correct these issues so the new disposal starts out on a solid footing. We finish by running the disposal and dishwasher together and checking every joint.
Older Homes and Rural Properties in Green
Not all of Green is new. The city includes older homes and some properties on larger lots, a few of which still rely on septic systems. For those homes we talk through how a disposal affects the tank and recommend lighter use and a finer-grinding unit.
If you are updating the whole kitchen, we can coordinate the sink, faucet and disposal together. See our kitchen and bath remodeling in Green, or our faucet replacement service in Green if you only need a new tap.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the disposal in my newer Green home wear out so soon?
Builders often install the most basic units, with small motors and galvanized parts. They are not designed for long, heavy use, so wear shows up sooner than with a mid-range model.
What should I upgrade to from a builder-grade disposal?
A 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower unit with stainless grinding parts and some sound insulation is a solid step up for most households.
Can I keep the same mounting ring when replacing my disposal?
Sometimes. If the new unit uses the same mount and the flange seal is in good shape, we can reuse it. Otherwise we install a new mount and reseal the sink.
Why does my newer kitchen sink gurgle when the disposal runs?
Gurgling can mean a partial clog or a venting issue in the drain. We can check it during the replacement.
