Fixing and Upgrading Builder-Grade Gas Fireplaces in Green

Green has grown fast over the last few decades, and many of its newer homes came with a gas fireplace the builder picked. Those units are reliable, but as they age, the electronic ignition, remote receivers and batteries start causing trouble. K & K Plumbing repairs them, upgrades them when it makes sense and installs new units and gas lines. Green is about 15 miles from our East Canton shop.

How Newer Fireplace Ignition Works

Many fireplaces installed in recent decades skip the old always-on pilot. Instead, they use intermittent pilot ignition: when you call for heat, a control module sends sparks to the pilot, the pilot lights, a flame sensor confirms it, and the main burner opens. When you turn the fireplace off, everything goes out. It saves gas over a season, but it adds parts that a standing-pilot unit never had.

Those parts include the control module, the spark electrode, the flame sensor, a remote receiver, and either a power adapter or a battery pack. A problem with any one of them can look like a dead fireplace.

Symptoms and What They Usually Mean

That last item is worth stressing. A noticeable whoosh or small puff on lighting means gas is collecting before it ignites. Stop using the fireplace and schedule a repair.

  • Clicking with no pilot flame: no gas reaching the pilot, a closed shutoff, or a dirty pilot orifice
  • Pilot lights, then everything shuts down after a few seconds: dirty or misaligned flame sensor
  • No clicking at all: dead batteries, failed power adapter or a module fault
  • Remote does nothing but the wall switch works: receiver batteries or lost pairing
  • Works for a while, then quits midway through the evening: weak batteries sagging under load
  • Burner lights unevenly with a puff: delayed ignition that needs prompt attention

Our Approach to Electronic Ignition Repair

We start with the simplest checks: fresh batteries in the receiver and backup pack, power to the adapter and the position of the gas shutoff. Then we watch the ignition sequence and use a meter to check spark, flame sensing and voltage at the module. Cleaning a sooted flame sensor or a clogged pilot orifice fixes many units outright.

When a module or receiver has failed, we match the replacement to your fireplace's model number. Universal remotes are tempting, but the safest route is the receiver and module the manufacturer specifies.

When an Upgrade Makes More Sense

Builder-grade units are often the base model: modest heat, a basic log set, a wall switch and no blower. If yours works but disappoints, you have options short of tearing out the wall.

Within the existing unit

Many fireplaces accept factory add-ons such as a blower kit, a remote with thermostat, or an upgraded log or media set. These are specific to each model, so we look up what yours supports.

Replacing the unit

If you want much more heat or a different look, a new direct-vent fireplace can go into the same chase. Rough-opening dimensions and vent sizes vary, so expect some framing and vent work, but the gas line is already nearby, which helps.

Supply Checks for Growing Households

Families in Green often add gas appliances over time: a tankless water heater, a gas range, a patio grill line. Each one adds to the load on piping that was sized when the house was built. If your fireplace flame shrinks when other appliances run, the supply may be undersized. Our Green gas line service can measure and correct it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my fireplace click but not light?

The igniter is sparking but no pilot gas is lighting. Common causes are a closed shutoff valve, a clogged pilot orifice or air in the line after the gas was off. If it persists after checking the valve, call for service.

Why did my fireplace remote stop working?

Usually dead batteries in the remote or the receiver, or the two have lost pairing. If new batteries and re-pairing do not fix it, the receiver may have failed.

Can I upgrade a builder-grade fireplace without redoing the wall?

Often. Many models accept a factory blower, remote or improved log set. A full replacement involves more framing and vent work.

Do electronic ignition fireplaces work in a power outage?

Many have a battery backup that allows lighting without household power. Blowers will not run. Check your manual, and keep fresh batteries in the backup pack before winter.
