Akron Gas Stove Hookups and Repairs for Older Kitchens

A lot of Akron kitchens were built long before today's appliances, and the gas piping behind the stove often shows it. K & K Plumbing handles gas stove repair in Akron along with new hookups, connector upgrades and shutoff replacement. We drive up from East Canton, about 24 miles away, to homes across the city and nearby Tallmadge, Fairlawn and Cuyahoga Falls.

What We Find Behind Stoves in Akron's Older Homes

Akron grew fast in the early twentieth century, and many neighborhoods still have houses from that era, along with plenty of postwar homes. Over the decades, kitchens get remodeled, stoves get swapped and piping gets extended. By the time we pull a stove out, it is common to see a mix of parts from three different decades.

None of that means the house is unsafe, but some of it deserves replacement. The connector is the weak link we see most. Older uncoated brass connectors were made years ago and can crack at the flared ends, especially after the stove has been pushed and pulled for cleaning a few times.

  • Uncoated brass connectors, sometimes painted over or kinked behind the stove
  • Old plug-style shutoff valves that are frozen in place
  • Stub-outs coming through the floor instead of the wall, set for an appliance from long ago
  • Pipe extensions made of several short nipples and fittings, each one a possible leak point

Our Approach to a Stove Hookup in an Older House

When you buy a new stove, we start by checking the supply. Is the valve operable? Is the stub-out in a place where the new connector can run without kinking? Does the stove need a 120-volt outlet for its igniters, and is there one within reach of the cord? Then we replace the connector, and usually the valve, with new parts.

After the stove is connected, we test each joint for leaks, light every burner and the oven, and check the flame. We also install the anti-tip bracket that came with the stove. It is easy for that bracket to end up in the recycling with the box, and it matters if a child ever climbs on an open oven door.

Repairs We Handle for Akron Gas Stoves

Older stoves and newer ones fail in different ways. Older units may still have a standing pilot light that goes out and leaves a burner that will not light. Newer units rely on spark igniters and an oven igniter that can weaken with age. We diagnose both.

If you notice a smell only when the oven is running, it is often the oven burner taking too long to light because the igniter is weak. That is worth a call, not something to live with. A persistent odor with everything turned off is more serious; leave the house and call your gas utility from outside first.

  • Relighting and adjusting standing pilots, or explaining when it is time to retire them
  • Testing oven igniters that glow but do not open the gas valve
  • Replacing cracked burner heads and misaligned caps
  • Finding small leaks at old fittings with a soap test and electronic detector

When a New Line or Different Appliance Makes More Sense

Sometimes the right fix is more than a connector. If you are moving the stove to a new wall during a remodel, a new branch line is cleaner than stretching the old one. Our Akron gas line service covers that work. If you are deciding between a freestanding stove and a separate cooktop and wall oven, take a look at our cooktop installation page for Akron as well. Frequently Asked Questions

Is an old brass gas connector dangerous?

Uncoated brass connectors have not been made for many years, and they can crack at the flare nuts as they age or get bent. If you see a dull yellow metal tube behind your stove, we recommend replacing it with a new coated stainless connector.

My shutoff valve behind the stove will not turn. Should I force it?

No. Forcing an old plug valve can break it or loosen the joint. Leave it alone and we will replace it with a quarter-turn ball valve while the gas is shut off upstream.

Can the gas stub-out be moved in an older Akron kitchen?

Usually, yes. We can run a new branch from the existing piping in the basement and bring it up through the floor or wall where the new stove will sit.

Does my new gas stove need electricity?

Most modern gas stoves need a standard 120-volt outlet for the spark igniters, oven igniter, clock and light. Older homes do not always have one behind the stove, so check before delivery day.
