Basement bathroom with ejector pump basin in a Navarre, Ohio home

Lower-Level Bathrooms, Laundry and Mudroom Remodels in Navarre

Navarre is a small village along the Tuscarawas River in southwestern Stark County, and a lot of its homes have basements and back entries that work hard: laundry, muddy boots, garden cleanup and storage. Remodeling those spaces, or adding a bathroom down below, takes a different kind of plumbing plan than a second-floor bath. K & K Plumbing handles lower-level and utility remodel plumbing in Navarre, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop, along with standard kitchen and bathroom projects.

Adding a bathroom below the sewer line

Gravity does most of the work in household drains. When a basement bathroom sits lower than the main sewer or septic line leaving the house, wastewater cannot flow out on its own. The usual answer is a sewage ejector pump: a sealed basin set into the floor collects waste from the toilet, sink and shower, and a pump lifts it up to the main line.

Installing one involves breaking the slab for the basin, running a discharge line with a check valve, and venting the basin properly. We size the pump for the fixtures you plan and place the basin where it can be reached for service. Another option for a single toilet and sink is an above-floor macerating system, which avoids cutting the slab but has its own tradeoffs.

Planning plumbing in a damp or low basement

Homes in river valleys and low-lying areas sometimes deal with damp basements or heavy groundwater after big rains and spring thaws. That does not rule out a basement bathroom, but it shapes the plan. We look at your sump setup and floor drains before recommending a layout.

  • Keep the ejector basin and sump pit separate; they serve different purposes
  • Consider a backwater valve where sewer backups are a concern
  • Raise water heaters and laundry equipment on platforms if water has collected before
  • Use moisture-resistant materials around fixtures
  • Make sure shutoffs are easy to reach in an emergency

Laundry room upgrades and relocations

Moving the washer from the basement to a first-floor mudroom or upstairs hallway saves a lot of trips with a basket. It requires a hot and cold supply box, a properly sized standpipe drain with a trap and vent, and ideally a drain pan under the washer if it sits above finished space. Leaving the laundry in the basement but upgrading it is also common: replacing rubber hoses with braided lines, adding a utility sink and installing a better floor drain.

Laundry relocations and new lines fall under our new plumbing installations in Navarre.

Mudroom and utility sink ideas

For households that garden, farm, hunt or have dogs, a mudroom sink is one of the most useful fixtures in the house. A deep utility sink with a tall faucet, or even a small dog-wash shower basin, keeps dirt out of the kitchen and main bathroom. These need a drain and vent like any other fixture, so planning them at the start of a remodel keeps costs down.

Main-floor bathrooms and kitchens too

Of course, we also remodel the main bathroom and kitchen in Navarre homes. Many of the village's older houses benefit from replacing aging supply lines and adding shutoffs during the project. If a new toilet is on your list, see our toilet installation in Navarre page.

Every job follows our process: a free estimate, your approval of the project specifications, and completed work with a quality inspection. Our plumbers keep the work area neat. More details are on our main remodeling page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a sewage ejector pump work?

Waste from basement fixtures drains into a sealed basin in the floor. When the level rises, a pump turns on and pushes the waste up through a discharge pipe to the main sewer or septic line.

Is a macerating toilet a good alternative to cutting the slab?

It can be for a simple half bath. It sits on the floor and pumps waste out, but it is louder and less suited to heavy use than a full ejector system. We can explain which fits your plans.

Can my washer be moved out of the basement?

Usually, yes. It needs hot and cold supply lines, a properly vented drain and ideally a drain pan. We check the route to the nearest drain stack at the estimate.

Should I add a backwater valve during a basement remodel?

If you have had sewer backups or live in a low-lying area, it is worth discussing. It helps keep sewage from flowing back into basement fixtures during heavy storms.
