Backwater valve installed on a new basement drain line in Navarre, Ohio
Navarre, Stark County

New Below-Grade Plumbing for Navarre Homes in Wet Ground

Navarre sits along the Tuscarawas River in southwestern Stark County, and some properties in and around the village deal with wet soil, a high water table or heavy runoff during spring storms. When owners there add a basement bathroom, a laundry or any fixture below ground level, the new plumbing has to be designed with water pushing back in mind. K & K Plumbing builds those protections into the installation.

Why Low Fixtures Need Extra Thought Here

Any fixture below the level of the street sewer, or below the top of a septic tank, is at risk if that system backs up. During heavy rain, municipal lines can surcharge, and water follows the path of least resistance: up through the lowest drain in the house. A finished basement bathroom is often that lowest drain.

Groundwater is the other concern. Trenching for new drains in saturated soil is harder, the trench may fill with water, and the backfill has to be compacted properly so the pipe does not settle and lose its slope.

Protecting New Fixtures From Backups

Depending on the house, we may recommend one or more of these when adding below-grade plumbing:

  • A backwater valve on the drain serving the basement fixtures, which closes if sewage tries to flow back in
  • Routing upstairs fixtures so they bypass the backwater valve and can still drain during a backup
  • A sewage ejector basin, which isolates basement fixtures because they only discharge when the pump runs
  • A cleanout located where the valve and main line can be serviced
  • Careful placement of floor drains, or leaving them out of finished rooms entirely

Backwater valves need upkeep

A backwater valve has a flap that can get stuck open by debris or stuck closed by buildup. It needs an access cover and occasional inspection. We show owners where it is and how to check it.

Sump pit and new basement bathroom plumbing kept on separate systems

Sump Pumps and the New Plumbing

Most basements in wet areas already have a sump pump handling groundwater from the drain tile. When we add plumbing, we make sure the two systems stay separate. Washer and sink water should go to the sanitary drain, not the sump pit, and the sump should discharge outside, not into the sanitary line. Mixing them can overload the sewer during storms or contaminate the yard.

If the sump pit needs to move because of a new bathroom layout, or the pump is old, our sump pump installation team can replace or relocate it during the same project. A battery backup is worth considering for any basement that will hold finished living space.

Installing Drains in Wet Ground

Trenching through a basement floor in wet soil sometimes means pumping water out of the trench while we work. We bed the pipe on stone or compacted fill so it keeps a uniform slope, and we test the underground lines before they are covered. Supply lines in the basement stay off cold exterior walls and are insulated where they could sweat or freeze.

After the underground inspection, the floor is patched, and rough-in of vents and supply follows once the walls are framed. A final inspection comes after fixtures are set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a backwater valve do?

It lets wastewater flow out of the house but closes when water tries to flow back in from the sewer. It protects fixtures below street level from sewage backups.

Can I put a bathroom in a basement that has flooded before?

Often, yes, but the cause of the flooding needs to be addressed first. Groundwater problems call for drainage and sump work, while sewer backups call for a backwater valve or ejector system.

Should my washer drain into the sump pit?

No. Washer and sink water belongs in the sanitary drain. Sump pits are for groundwater and discharge outdoors.

How far is Navarre from your shop?

About 13 miles in a straight line from East Canton. We also serve Brewster, Massillon, Beach City, Bolivar and Strasburg.
