Copper Water Service Lines and Indoor Copper Repair in Navarre

Not every copper problem is in the basement. In Navarre, plenty of homes are fed by a buried copper line, either from the curb on village water or from a well out in the yard, and when that line leaks the clues are subtle. K & K Plumbing traces and repairs underground copper service lines and handles the indoor copper too, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop.

Signs the Line Under Your Yard Has a Problem

A leaking service line rarely announces itself with a gusher. Water finds its way into the soil, and depending on the ground, it may surface in the yard, drain away completely, or seep along the line into the basement wall. Watch for these signs.

  • A soggy or unusually green strip of lawn between the street or well and the house
  • Water seeping in where the main enters the foundation
  • A water meter that keeps turning with every fixture off
  • A well pump that cycles on when nobody is using water
  • Falling water pressure throughout the house

Village Service Lines Versus Well Lines

Homes in the village of Navarre are typically on public water, with a meter and a service line running from the curb to the house. The utility usually handles the pipe on its side of the curb stop, while the line from there to the house is the property owner's responsibility. The exact split varies, so it is worth confirming with your water provider.

Out in Bethlehem Township and the surrounding countryside, many homes draw from a private well. The buried line from the well to the pressure tank inside the house is entirely the homeowner's. On older properties that line may be copper, galvanized steel or early plastic, and any of them can fail with age, ground movement or a nicked line from past digging. Our Navarre well service handles the pump and tank side of those systems.

Repairing or Replacing a Buried Copper Line

Underground water lines are typically installed in Type K copper, the heaviest wall thickness, or in plastic pipe made for burial. Copper service lines can last a long time, but rocky soil, settling, and corrosive soil conditions can all cause leaks.

After a free estimate, we locate the line and narrow down the leak as closely as possible before any digging. If the line is in good shape apart from one spot, we excavate at the leak and splice in a new section. If it has failed in several places or is badly corroded, replacing the full run is the better choice. Lines are buried below frost depth so they do not freeze, and we restore the trench when the work is done. For larger main problems, our water main repair service covers the full scope.

Inside the House: The Rest of the Copper

Once the water is inside, it usually travels through copper supply piping to the water heater, kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. In Navarre's older homes, that interior copper can show the same wear as anywhere else: seeping joints, corroded valves and the occasional pinhole. We repair or replace interior sections while we are on site, and we can add a main shutoff valve right inside the foundation wall if your home does not have a reliable one.

If you are building on, remodeling, or finishing a basement, our new plumbing installation work brings new supply and drain lines where you need them. For more on copper pipe types, fittings and alternatives, see the Stark County copper overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my underground water line is leaking?

Turn off every fixture and watch the water meter, or listen for the well pump. If the meter moves or the pump runs with nothing on, water is going somewhere. Wet patches in the yard and water near where the line enters the house are other clues.

Who is responsible for the water line from the street to my Navarre home?

In most cases the utility maintains the line up to the curb stop or meter, and the homeowner is responsible from there to the house. Check with your water provider for the exact boundary.

What type of copper is used for buried water service lines?

Type K copper, which has the thickest wall, is the standard copper choice for burial. Some service lines use plastic pipe made for underground use instead.

Do you have to dig up the whole yard to fix a service line leak?

Not always. If we can locate the leak and the rest of the line is sound, we dig only at the leak. A full replacement requires a trench along the line's route.
