Navarre Gas Cooktop Safety, Repair and Installation
Navarre is a small village along the Tuscarawas River with plenty of rural property around it, and winter storms that knock out power are a fact of life here. A built-in gas cooktop can be a real asset when the lights go out, as long as you know how to handle it safely and what to do if something smells wrong.
If You Smell Gas Near the Cooktop
Natural gas and propane both carry an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs. How you respond depends on how strong it is.
- Strong odor or hissing: leave the house now, leave doors open behind you and call the gas utility, your propane supplier or 911 from outside
- Do not flip light switches, use the cooktop igniter or start a car in an attached garage
- Faint odor only in the cabinet: if safe, turn the shutoff valve so the handle sits crosswise to the pipe, open a window and call us
- Check that no burner knob was left partly on, which can release gas without a flame
- Do not return or relight anything until the source is found
Cooking on Gas When the Power Is Out
Most modern cooktops use electric spark igniters, so they will not light on their own during an outage. Many gas cooktops can still be lit manually with a long match or lighter held at the burner while the knob is turned to light. Whether yours allows this, and how, is spelled out in the owner's manual. Read that section before you need it.
Some newer models have electronic controls or safety valves that will not open without power. Those cannot be lit by hand at all. If cooking during outages matters to you, ask about that feature when choosing a cooktop. Never use outdoor grills or camp stoves indoors as a substitute.

Finding and Fixing Cooktop Leaks
Most cooktop leaks we find sit at the flexible connector, the flare fittings on each end of it, or the shutoff valve. They tend to develop when a connector is old, when the cooktop has been lifted or shifted, or when stored items have been shoved against the line. We locate leaks with leak-detection solution and electronic detection, then replace the faulty part with new rather than simply tightening old fittings.
After the repair, we test the whole section again and relight each burner. If the house piping beyond the kitchen is the source, we trace it back and repair it. For rural homes on a tank, see our propane line repair in Navarre; for utility gas, see Navarre natural gas line work.
A Shutoff You Can Reach in a Hurry
Every gas cooktop should have an accessible shutoff valve, usually in the base cabinet below it. In many kitchens it ends up buried behind cleaning supplies or hidden by a drawer box. Take a minute to find yours and make sure you can reach it. If you cannot find one, or the handle will not turn, call us to replace or relocate it. We also show each customer where their valve is after every installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I smell gas at my cooktop?
If the smell is strong, leave right away and call your gas utility, propane supplier or 911 from outside. If it is faint and only in the cabinet, close the shutoff if safe, ventilate and call us.
Can I light my gas cooktop when the power is out?
Many models can be lit carefully with a long match, but some electronic models cannot. Follow the instructions in your owner's manual.
Where should my cooktop shutoff valve be?
Usually in the base cabinet right under the cooktop or in the cabinet next to it, where you can reach it without moving drawers or appliances.
How do you fix a cooktop gas leak?
We pinpoint the leak, replace the faulty connector, fitting or valve with new parts, then retest the section and relight every burner.
