Finding and Fixing Hidden Copper Leaks in Stow Homes
Stow grew rapidly in the postwar decades, and many of its ranches and split-levels were built with copper lines running beneath concrete slabs, through crawlspaces, or inside walls where nobody looks. When those lines leak, the water often goes unseen for a long time. K & K Plumbing helps Stow homeowners track down hidden copper leaks and fix them in the way that makes the most sense for the house, from our East Canton shop about 27 miles away.
Clues That Water Is Escaping Somewhere You Cannot See
Hidden leaks leave indirect evidence. One clue alone may have another explanation, but two or three together are worth acting on.
- A warm spot on a tile or concrete floor, often from a leaking hot line underneath
- The sound of running water when every fixture is off
- A water bill that rises without any change in how you use water
- Damp or musty smell in a crawlspace, closet or lower level
- Cracks or damp patches in flooring, or carpet that feels wet at the edges
- Lower water pressure or a water heater that seems to run constantly
A Quick Test You Can Do Today
Turn off every faucet, appliance and irrigation line, and make sure no toilets are refilling. Then find your water meter and watch the dial or leak indicator, which is usually a small triangle or star, for a few minutes. If it moves, water is flowing somewhere. Next, close the main shutoff inside the house. If the meter stops, the leak is inside; if it keeps moving, the leak may be on the service line between the meter and the house.
This does not tell you exactly where the leak is, but it confirms there is one and tells us where to start looking.

Why Slabs and Crawlspaces Are Tough on Copper
Copper buried in or under concrete can rub against stone or rebar as the slab expands, contracts and settles, and the soil around it may be corrosive. Hot lines are especially prone, because they move more with temperature changes. In crawlspaces, copper is exposed to cold, humidity and sometimes standing water, which speeds corrosion on the outside of the pipe and can freeze lines near foundation vents.
In split-levels, copper often climbs through several framed levels in tight chases, so a leak in one spot may show up a level below, making the source harder to pin down.
Repair in Place or Reroute?
Once the leak is located, there are usually two options. Repairing in place means opening the floor or wall at the leak, replacing the damaged section and patching the opening. That works well when the leak is in one spot and the rest of the line is healthy.
Rerouting means abandoning the old line under the slab or in the wall and running a new one through the attic, ceiling or a more accessible path, sometimes in PEX and sometimes in copper. It avoids breaking concrete and tends to be the better long-term choice when a buried line has leaked more than once. We walk through both during your free estimate, you approve the approach, and we pressure-test and inspect the finished work.
After the Leak Is Fixed
Water that has been leaking for a while can leave damp subfloor, insulation or drywall behind, and we offer plumbing damage inspections and insurance assistance to help you sort it out. Ongoing checkups through our Stow plumbing maintenance plans help catch the next problem earlier. If rerouting turns into a bigger update, such as a new bath, our new plumbing installation team can take it from there. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Stow home has a slab leak?
Warm spots on the floor, the sound of running water with everything off, a rising water bill and a meter that moves when nothing is in use are the most common signs. A professional inspection can confirm the location.
Is it better to repair a slab leak or reroute the pipe?
A single leak on otherwise healthy pipe can be repaired in place. If the line has leaked before or the concrete is hard to open, rerouting a new line overhead is often the more lasting option.
Why do hot water lines leak under slabs more often?
Hot lines expand and contract more with every use, which causes more rubbing against concrete and stone. Heat also speeds corrosion on the pipe.
Can a leak in a crawlspace cause other problems?
Yes. Constant moisture can lead to mold, rot in floor framing and damp insulation. It is worth fixing promptly and checking for damage.
