Linear gas fireplace with glass media in a Fairlawn great room

Fairlawn Gas Fireplace Installation: Linear, See-Through and Outdoor Units

Fairlawn homeowners often come to us with a design already in mind: a long, low linear fireplace in a great room, a see-through unit between kitchen and family room, or a fireplace on the patio. K & K Plumbing helps match the look you want with a unit that vents and connects properly, then installs and services it. Fairlawn is about 29 miles from our East Canton shop, and we serve it as part of our Summit County work.

Choosing a Style That Fits the Room

Fireplace styles have moved well beyond the traditional box with ceramic logs. Each style comes with its own installation considerations, so it helps to know them before you fall for one in a showroom.

Linear units

Long, narrow fireboxes with a ribbon of flame over glass or stone media. They suit contemporary rooms and often sit beneath a wall-mounted TV. Many models offer a heat-release kit or a cool-wall design to keep the area above the opening from getting too hot for electronics. The manual will specify minimum mantel and TV clearances.

See-through and multi-sided

Two-sided units are visible from both rooms; three-sided peninsula models open on three faces. They are striking, but every exposed face needs its own clearances, and the vent must leave from the top or a specific side as the manual allows.

Traditional

A familiar log set behind glass, now often with a more realistic burner and ember bed. These fit nearly any home and usually have the most venting flexibility.

Venting Larger and Multi-Sided Fireplaces

Almost every indoor design fireplace we install is a sealed direct-vent unit. Bigger fireboxes mean larger vent pipe, and the allowable run length, number of elbows and termination location are all set by the manufacturer. A three-sided unit in the middle of an open floor plan may need to vent straight up through a second floor or attic to the roof. We map the route before you commit to a placement so there are no surprises once framing starts.

Vent-free versions of linear units are uncommon and come with tight room-size limits, so we rarely suggest them for these installations.

Gas Supply for High-Input Fireplaces

Wide linear and multi-sided units can draw considerably more gas than a standard fireplace. Add a gas range, a large water heater and a furnace sized for a big home, and the existing piping may not keep up. We total the load, confirm pressure at the meter and size a dedicated branch when needed. Each fireplace gets its own accessible shutoff valve. Our Fairlawn natural gas line service handles any larger upgrades.

Outdoor Gas Fireplaces and Patio Features

Outdoor gas fireplaces extend patio season well into the fall. They must be models listed for outdoor use; an indoor unit placed outside will not hold up and is not safe. Outdoor installations need their own planning:

  • A buried or wall-mounted gas line with the correct pipe material and depth for outdoor runs
  • An shutoff valve suited to outdoor use near the feature
  • Clearances to overhead covers, pergolas, siding and landscaping
  • Drainage at the burner pan so rain and snowmelt do not pool
  • A weather cover when the unit is not in use

Servicing Design Fireplaces

Glass media and stone beds look clean but trap dust, and on linear burners that dust can lift the flame unevenly. Electronic ignition modules and remote receivers in these units are also more involved than a basic standing pilot. During service, we clean and correctly reset the media, test the ignition sequence and the battery backup, and check the glass and gasket. For outdoor units, we add a check for insect nests in the burner and any corrosion at the valve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a linear gas fireplace go under a TV?

Many can, especially cool-wall or heat-release models designed for it. The manufacturer lists minimum distances to the TV and mantel, and we follow those during framing and installation.

What does a see-through fireplace need for venting?

Most are direct-vent and exit from the top or a specified side. Because they often sit mid-room, the vent may need to rise through the roof. We check the allowed run length and elbows before placement is final.

How is gas run to an outdoor fireplace?

We extend a branch from the house with materials and burial depth suited to outdoor use, add an outdoor shutoff valve and pressure-test the line before connecting the fireplace.

Do outdoor gas fireplaces need winter care?

Yes. Turn the unit off, cover it and keep snow from piling into the burner pan. In spring, have the burner checked for nests and debris before the first use.
