Gas Fireplace Installation, Hookup and Repair for Stark County Homes and Businesses
A gas fireplace is part appliance, part heating system and part gas piping job. K & K Plumbing installs new units and inserts, runs and connects the gas supply line, and repairs pilots, thermocouples and valves for homeowners and businesses throughout Stark County and neighboring Summit County. Every job starts with a free estimate so you know the plan before anything gets cut or connected.
We handle the work that keeps fuel moving safely into the firebox. That means setting the appliance, connecting it to your natural gas or propane system, confirming the venting is right for the model, and lighting it off with a full check of the controls. On the repair side, most calls trace back to a handful of parts: the pilot assembly, the thermocouple or thermopile, the gas valve, the igniter, or a supply problem upstream of the unit.
Because we are a plumbing and gas-fitting company, the gas piping itself is where we spend a lot of our attention. A fireplace that is starved for fuel, connected with the wrong fittings, or missing an accessible shutoff will never run well no matter how nice the unit is.

Direct-Vent, Vent-Free and Inserts: Choosing the Right Unit
The biggest decision is how the fireplace breathes. A direct-vent fireplace is sealed behind glass. It pulls combustion air from outdoors and sends exhaust back out through a two-layer pipe that runs through an exterior wall or the roof. Room air never feeds the flame, which makes direct-vent the choice we recommend for most living rooms, basements and bedrooms.
A vent-free fireplace has no flue at all. It burns very cleanly and puts nearly all of its heat into the room, but it also releases combustion byproducts and moisture into the house. These units carry an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts off the gas if room oxygen drops. They need a room large enough for their BTU rating, and manufacturers and local rules often limit where they can go, so we size them carefully and talk through the tradeoffs before recommending one.
A gas insert slides into an existing fireplace opening. It usually needs a pair of flexible liners run up the old chimney, one for fresh air and one for exhaust, which turns a drafty masonry fireplace into a sealed heater. B-vent units, which draw room air and vent through a single pipe, still exist in many older homes and can be serviced or replaced.
Signs Your Gas Fireplace Needs Service
Gas fireplaces tend to give warnings before they quit completely. If you notice any of the following, it is worth a call before the coldest weeks arrive. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside first, then call us for the repair.
Pilot lights but goes out as soon as you release the knob
Main burner will not come on even though the pilot is burning
Tall, lazy yellow flames, soot on the logs or black streaks on the glass
Clicking igniter with no flame on an electronic-ignition model
A persistent odor beyond the normal first-burn smell of a new unit
Heavy white or gray film building up on the glass quickly
Remote or wall switch works intermittently or not at all
Residential and Commercial Gas Fireplace Needs
In homes, most of our fireplace work is either a new unit going into a remodel, a wood-burning fireplace being converted, or an older gas unit that will not stay lit. Homeowners usually care about heat output, how the flame looks, how quiet the blower is, and how the remote works. We help match the unit size to the room so it does not run you out of the space or barely take the chill off.
Commercial spaces such as restaurant dining rooms, office lobbies, clubhouses and event venues ask more of a fireplace. They often run many hours a day, sit in high-traffic areas and need glass barriers or screens to protect guests. Those jobs call for heavier attention to gas supply sizing when the fireplace shares a line with kitchen equipment or rooftop units, and to keeping service access clear so routine maintenance does not disrupt business hours.
How a Fireplace Installation Works With K & K Plumbing
Our process is simple. First, you contact us for a free estimate and we look at the room, the wall or chimney, and the gas service. Second, you approve the project specifications: the unit, the vent route, the gas line path and any framing or finish work. Third, we complete the installation and perform a quality inspection before we hand you the remote.
On the gas side, we confirm the existing meter and piping can carry the new load alongside your furnace, water heater and any other gas appliances. If not, we size a new branch. We install an accessible shutoff valve near the appliance, add a sediment trap where required, make the connection and pressure-test the work. The venting is routed exactly as the manufacturer's installation manual specifies, with the clearances to windows, doors and grade that the manual calls for. We follow local permit and inspection requirements and coordinate with the inspector when one is needed.
Options and Materials Worth Knowing About
Gas supply piping is typically black iron or corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). Black iron is rugged and familiar; CSST snakes through finished walls with fewer joints and must be bonded according to its manufacturer's instructions. Either works when it is sized and installed correctly, and we choose based on the route and what is already in the house.
On the appliance itself, ignition comes in two broad styles. A standing pilot burns all season and uses a thermocouple or thermopile to make its own small current, so it keeps working during a power outage. Electronic or intermittent pilot ignition lights only on demand, saving fuel, and many models include a battery backup. Beyond that, you can choose between traditional log sets, glass media and stone, plus blowers, wall thermostats and remote controls.
Natural gas or propane
Most units are sold for one fuel and converted with a factory kit that changes the burner orifice and valve settings. Rural properties on propane get the same installations with regulator and tank pressure confirmed before startup. See our propane line service and natural gas piping work for more on the supply side.
Preparation, Seasonal Startup and Ongoing Maintenance
Before an installation, clear the area around the fireplace wall and let us know where the attic, crawlspace or basement access is so we can trace the gas route. For an insert, have the chimney swept and inspected first so the liner goes into a sound flue.
Each fall, a startup visit pays off. We clean dust and cobwebs from the pilot and burner, check the thermocouple output, inspect the glass gasket, look over the outdoor vent cap for nests or damage, and confirm the logs are positioned the way the manual shows. You should also test your carbon monoxide alarms. Homeowners on our Residential Plumbing Maintenance Agreement get an annual inspection and 10% off labor and materials, which pairs well with a yearly fireplace checkup. If you would rather have someone look over your gas and water systems as a whole, our plumbing inspection service covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a direct-vent and a vent-free gas fireplace?
A direct-vent unit is sealed and vents outside through a wall or roof, using outdoor air for combustion. A vent-free unit has no flue and releases its exhaust and moisture into the room. Direct-vent is the safer general choice; vent-free can work in larger rooms where its limits are respected.
Why does my gas fireplace pilot keep going out?
The usual causes are a worn thermocouple or thermopile, a dirty pilot orifice that makes the flame too small to heat the sensor, a draft blowing the flame aside, or low gas pressure. We test each one rather than guessing at parts.
Can a plumber run the gas line to a new fireplace?
Yes. Gas fitting is a core part of our work. We size the branch, install a shutoff valve near the unit, make the connection and pressure-test it before lighting the fireplace.
Can a gas insert go into my existing wood-burning fireplace?
Usually, if the firebox is large enough and the chimney is sound. The insert typically needs liners run up the flue. We measure the opening during the free estimate and confirm whether an insert or a different option fits better.
Do you also install decorative gas log sets?
Yes, but log sets are a different product from sealed fireplaces and inserts. See our gas log installation page for details on those.
