Gas Fireplaces for Hartville Additions, Sunrooms and Country Homes
Around Hartville, homes range from older farmhouses to newer builds on larger lots, and owners here love adding space: a sunroom, a four-season porch, a family room off the back. A gas fireplace is often what makes that new room usable in January. K & K Plumbing plans and installs those fireplaces, runs the gas line to the addition, and repairs the units once they are in. We are about 13 miles from our East Canton shop.
Why Additions and Sunrooms Run Cold
New rooms are often an afterthought for the home's furnace. The ductwork was sized for the original house, the addition sits at the end of a long run, and sunrooms have a lot of glass. The result is a beautiful room nobody uses from December to March. A properly sized gas fireplace gives that space its own heat without rebalancing the whole duct system.
Because sunrooms lose heat quickly through glass, we size the unit for the room's actual heat loss rather than square footage alone, and look at models with a thermostat option so the room stays comfortable without constant adjustment.
Picking the Right Unit for a Glassy Room
A sealed direct-vent fireplace is our usual recommendation for additions. Exterior walls are close by, so the vent run is short, and the unit brings in its own combustion air instead of pulling it from a room that may already be drafty or tightly sealed, depending on how it was built.
Vent-free units sometimes come up for sunrooms because there is no pipe to route. The trouble is moisture: a vent-free fireplace releases water vapor, and a room full of cold glass turns that vapor into condensation on every pane. We generally steer Hartville owners toward direct-vent for these spaces for that reason.

Getting Gas Out to the Addition
The gas line is often the part of the project people do not think about until the walls are up. An addition built on a slab or over a crawlspace may not have an easy path from the existing basement. We plan the route early, whether that means running through the crawlspace, along the rim joist or underground in a properly protected line, and we install a shutoff valve within reach of the fireplace.
Many properties outside the village run on propane rather than a natural gas main. The fireplace has to be built or converted for the fuel you have, and the piping is sized accordingly. Our propane line service in Hartville and natural gas piping work cover both situations.
Garages, Workshops and Outbuildings
We get asked about putting a gas fireplace in a detached shop or heated garage. Residential fireplaces are generally not listed for garages, where vehicles and fuel vapors are present, and manufacturers prohibit it. A properly listed garage or shop heater is usually the right appliance for those spaces. We can run the gas line for it and explain the options.

Ready for Winter Outages
Country roads and long utility lines mean an ice storm can leave homes without power for a while. If keeping a room warm during an outage matters to you, consider these points when choosing a unit:
- Standing-pilot models with a millivolt valve light and run without household electricity
- Electronic ignition models should have a battery backup, with fresh batteries each fall
- The blower will stop when power fails, so the unit relies on radiant heat
- Keep a working, battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm near any gas appliance
- On propane, keep the tank reasonably full heading into winter
Repairs and Seasonal Service
Once installed, an addition fireplace needs the same yearly care as any other: burner and pilot cleaning, sensor testing, a gasket and glass check and a look at the vent cap. If yours already has a pilot that drops out or a burner that lights slowly, we can diagnose it on the same visit. See our county gas fireplace page for details on repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a gas fireplace heat a sunroom or four-season room?
Yes, when it is sized for the room's heat loss, which is higher than usual because of all the glass. A thermostat-controlled direct-vent unit works well in most of these rooms.
How do you get gas to a fireplace in a new addition?
We plan a route from the existing supply through a crawlspace, along framing or underground, size the branch for the fireplace and other appliances, and add a shutoff valve near the unit.
Can a gas fireplace go in a garage or workshop?
Residential fireplaces are generally not listed for garages. A heater designed and listed for that space is the safer choice, and we can supply the gas line for it.
What kind of fireplace is best for keeping warm during outages?
A standing-pilot model with a millivolt valve runs without electricity. Electronic-ignition units with battery backup can also light without power.
