Gas Log Installs and Troubleshooting From Our East Canton Shop

East Canton is where our shop is, on Hillvale Street in the Osnaburg Township area, so the fireplaces in this village and the surrounding countryside are about as local as it gets for us. Whether you want a new gas log set in a wood-burning fireplace or your current logs are acting up, K & K Plumbing is right down the road during business hours.

Symptoms We Diagnose Most Often

A lot of the gas log calls we take close to home are not new installs. They are sets that have been in for years and have started to misbehave. Most problems trace back to a handful of causes.

  • Black soot building up on the logs or brick above the opening
  • A pilot that lights but goes out when you release the knob
  • A delayed, loud ignition when the main burner comes on
  • Flames that are mostly blue and low on a vented set, or tall and yellow on a vent-free set
  • A gas smell near the hearth when the set is off
  • Logs that are cracking, crumbling or shedding pieces into the pan

What Usually Causes Each One

A gas smell is different from the rest. If you smell gas, do not try to light anything. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside, then call us for the repair.

Soot

Logs out of position are the top cause. When a log sits in the flame instead of beside it, the flame cools and deposits carbon. Partly clogged burner ports and too much ember material piled over the burner do the same. Resetting the logs to the diagram fixes most cases.

Pilot drops out

On safety-pilot sets, the thermocouple or thermopile senses the pilot flame and keeps the gas valve open. A worn sensor, a dirty pilot orifice or a weak, wavering pilot will let the valve close. Cleaning or replacing the part is usually a quick repair.

Delayed ignition

If gas builds up before it catches, you hear a whoosh or small boom. That points to a pilot that is not positioned right, blocked carryover ports or embers covering the burner. It should be looked at promptly rather than lived with.

Repair or Replace an Older Set?

Older log sets around East Canton are often match-lit units installed decades ago, sometimes with no safety shutoff at all. If the logs are falling apart, the burner pan has rusted through or the valve no longer seals, replacing the whole set usually makes more sense than chasing parts.

Replacement is also a chance to change types. Plenty of people who had vent-free logs installed years ago now prefer vented logs because of the moisture and odor, while others want to add a safety pilot and remote they never had. We remove the old set, check the existing line and key valve, and reuse them only if they are sound.

New Conversions in the Village and Township

Homes in the village are mostly on natural gas, while many country properties in Osnaburg Township and toward Waynesburg and Malvern run on propane. Either way, a conversion follows the same path: chimney check, gas branch to the firebox through a sleeve, key valve or control valve, damper clamp for vented sets, and careful log placement. Our East Canton propane line work and local natural gas piping cover the supply side.

Keep It Clean Between Visits

Vacuum around the burner gently with a brush attachment once or twice a season, keep pets' toys and paper away from the opening, and check log positions after anyone moves them. An annual service visit, which can be part of our East Canton plumbing maintenance or the yearly maintenance agreement, covers the parts you cannot easily reach. More on log choices is on our Stark County page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean soot off my gas logs?

Light soot can often be brushed off outdoors with a soft brush once the logs are cool. Do not wash them. If soot keeps coming back, the cause, usually log position or burner ports, needs to be fixed.

How do I relight my gas log pilot?

Follow the lighting instructions on the label for your set, usually found on the valve or in the burner area. If the pilot will not stay lit after a couple of tries, stop and call for service.

Are old match-lit gas logs unsafe?

Not automatically, but they have no automatic shutoff if the flame goes out. Many owners choose to upgrade to a safety-pilot set for peace of mind.

Do you service gas logs you did not install?

Yes. We work on most brands of log sets and burners, regardless of who put them in.

Why is my vent-free log set suddenly shutting off?

The oxygen depletion sensor may be dirty or sensing poor air. Clean the area around the pilot and make sure the room is not sealed up tightly; if it continues, have it checked.
