Plumber placing logs on a new gas burner in a Louisville, Ohio fireplace
Louisville, Stark County

What a Gas Log Install Looks Like in a Louisville Home

Louisville is close to home for us, roughly 4 miles from our East Canton shop, and we have worked in plenty of the city's fireplaces. If you are thinking about a gas log set but want to know what the job actually involves, this page walks through it step by step, from the first visit to the moment you turn the key.

Step One: The Estimate Visit

We start with a free estimate at the house. A plumber looks at the fireplace opening, measures the firebox, opens and closes the damper, and shines a light up the flue. Then we head to the basement or crawlspace to see where the gas piping runs and how far it is to the hearth.

We also ask how you want to use the fire. That conversation decides between vented and vent-free logs and between match-lit and safety-pilot controls. You leave the visit with clear specifications and a written estimate to approve.

  • Firebox front width, back width, depth and height
  • Damper condition and whether it closes fully
  • Flue opening, signs of creosote or blockage
  • Distance and route from existing gas pipe to the hearth
  • Meter or tank capacity for the added appliance

Before We Arrive on Install Day

If the fireplace has burned wood, book a chimney sweep a week or two ahead. Clear the hearth, mantel and the space in front of the fireplace, and move fragile items off nearby shelves since drilling brick causes some vibration. If the gas line will come up from the basement, clear a path to that wall too.

We lay down drop cloths and treat the home the way invited guests would, but a little advance clearing keeps the day moving.

Step Two: Gas Line and Valve

The gas supply to the house is shut off briefly while we tie a new branch into the existing piping. From there the line runs to the fireplace, usually up through the floor near the hearth in Louisville's many basement homes. We drill through the side wall or floor of the firebox with a masonry bit, insert a sleeve, and pass the pipe through so it never contacts raw mortar.

For a match-lit set, the key valve goes in the wall or floor just outside the opening, with a trim plate. For a safety-pilot set, a shutoff is placed where you can reach it and the control valve sits under the burner. Once the gas is back on, we relight water heater and furnace pilots if your appliances use them. If the house needs a longer or new run, our Louisville gas line team or propane piping service handles it.

Step Three: Burner, Damper and Logs

With the gas in place, the burner pan and grate are set and connected. For vented sets, a damper clamp is fitted so the damper stays partly open at all times. Then we pour and spread the sand or vermiculite base, add glowing ember material, and place each log exactly where the diagram calls for it.

Log placement matters more than most people expect. A log a couple of inches off can block burner ports and leave black soot on the logs and brick within a week. We get it right the first time and show you the layout so you can match it after cleaning.

Step Four: Testing and Walkthrough

Every new joint is tested for leaks before the burner is lit. Then we light the set, let it run, and watch the flame pattern, pilot and draft at the opening. On vented sets we check that combustion gases are going up the flue rather than rolling out the front.

Finally, we walk you and anyone else in the house through lighting, adjusting and shutting off the logs, and show you where the manual shutoff is. Our main gas log page has more on log styles and ignition options if you are still deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the install take in my Louisville home?

With a sound chimney and gas piping nearby, most installs are finished in a single visit. Long pipe runs or thick stone fireplaces can stretch it, and we will tell you during the estimate.

Will my furnace and water heater be off during the work?

Only briefly while we tie into the main piping. We restore gas as soon as the branch is connected and relight any standing pilots.

Do I need to be home the whole time?

Someone should be home at the start to let us in and at the end for the walkthrough. Many customers stay for the whole visit, which is fine too.

What if you find a problem with the chimney during install?

We stop and talk with you before going further. A blocked or damaged flue has to be addressed before vented logs can be used safely.

Can you remove my old log set at the same time?

Yes. We disconnect and remove the old burner and logs, cap or reuse the line as appropriate, and install the new set.
