Hartville Gas Logs: Installation and a Season-by-Season Plan

In Hartville, the first chilly evenings of October are when most people think about the fireplace. That is also when we get calls about pilots that will not stay lit and logs that suddenly smoke. K & K Plumbing, about 13 miles away in East Canton, installs gas log sets in existing wood-burning fireplaces and helps homeowners keep them running from one heating season to the next.

Plan the Install Before the Cold Arrives

Late summer and early fall are the easiest time to convert a fireplace. Chimney sweeps have more openings, log sets are in stock, and you are not trying to keep the house warm while the gas is briefly shut off for the tie-in. Waiting until the first hard freeze can mean a longer wait for every piece of the job.

A typical Hartville conversion includes a chimney check, a new gas branch to the firebox, a key valve or control valve, a damper clamp for vented sets, and the burner and logs. Many homes around Hartville are in the country and run on propane, while others are on natural gas; the set is ordered for whichever fuel you have.

Fall Startup Checklist

If your logs have been sitting since spring, a few minutes of checking before the first fire can prevent a service call.

  • Look up the flue with a flashlight for nests or debris, especially if the chimney has no cap
  • Check that the damper clamp is still in place on vented sets
  • Vacuum dust, cobwebs and pet hair from around the burner and logs
  • Compare log positions to the layout diagram and reset anything that shifted
  • Test your carbon monoxide alarm and replace its battery
  • Light the pilot and look for a steady, mostly blue flame that touches the thermocouple or thermopile

When the pilot won't cooperate

Over the summer, insects sometimes build webs or nests inside pilot tubes, especially on propane sets. The result is a small, yellow or wavering pilot that will not hold. A weak thermocouple causes similar symptoms. These are cleaning and parts jobs we handle during a service visit.

During the Heating Season

Hartville winters bring plenty of snow and long stretches of cold, and a gas log set may run more than you expected. Keep an eye on the logs as the season goes on. A small amount of light gray ash is normal on some sets. Black soot on the logs or the brick face above the opening is not. It usually means a log has moved into the flame or the burner ports are partly blocked.

With vent-free logs, follow the manufacturer's run-time guidance and crack a window during long burns if you notice condensation on cold glass.

Spring Shutdown

Once the weather turns, many homeowners shut off the standing pilot to save a bit of fuel over the summer. That is fine, and simply means relighting it in the fall. If you prefer to leave it lit, the pilot's small flame can discourage moisture in the firebox. Either way, close any glass doors the log maker allows and put a cover over the chimney opening if you have had trouble with birds.

Spring is also a good time to note anything odd you saw during the winter, like a delayed ignition or a gas smell at startup, and schedule it before you forget.

Annual Service and Maintenance Plans

A yearly visit covers cleaning burner ports, checking the pilot assembly and thermocouple, inspecting the valve and connector for leaks, and resetting the logs and embers. Homes on propane can also have the line from the tank checked through our Hartville propane gas line service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to leave the gas log pilot on all summer?

Yes, a properly working standing pilot is designed to run continuously. Turning it off saves a little fuel; just relight it carefully in the fall following the instructions on the set.

My logs smell when I first light them each fall. Is that normal?

A brief dusty smell as accumulated dust burns off is common. A gas smell, or an odor that lingers, is not. Shut the set off and call us.

How long before winter should I schedule a gas log install?

A few weeks ahead of when you want to use it is ideal. That leaves time for a chimney sweep, ordering the right set and scheduling the install.

Should I cap my chimney after converting to gas logs?

A chimney cap keeps out rain, birds and animals and is a good idea for most homes. It must not restrict the flue opening below what the log set requires.
