Room Addition Plumbing for Canton Homes
Canton's older neighborhoods are lined with century homes, and plenty of owners would rather build on than move. Rear additions with a first-floor bathroom, a mudroom with laundry, or a bigger kitchen bump-out all need new plumbing designed around an existing house. Our shop in East Canton is about five miles away, so Canton projects are close to home for K & K Plumbing.
Start With What the House Already Has
An addition only works as well as the system it connects to. Before drawing any new lines, we check three things in the existing house:
- The water service: its size and material where it enters from the street, and whether it can supply the added fixtures without a drop in pressure
- The building drain and main stack: their size, condition and where a new branch can connect
- The water heater: whether its capacity covers an extra bathroom or a second laundry
When the old service holds the project back
Some older Canton homes still have small-diameter or aging service lines. Adding a bathroom on the far side of the house can expose how undersized that line really is. If the service needs attention, our water main repair team can upgrade it as part of the same project. Similarly, if the interior branch lines are corroded galvanized pipe, it may make sense to repipe part of the house while walls are already open.
Getting Pipes Into the Addition
How the new plumbing reaches the addition depends on what is under it. Over a full basement, it is straightforward: lines run through the basement ceiling and up into the new walls. Over a crawlspace, drains and supply lines are hung beneath the floor with access left for future service, and supply lines are kept on the warm side of the insulation. On a slab, drains go in the ground before the pour and are inspected first.
Where the addition meets the old foundation, we plan penetrations carefully. Cutting through an old stone or block wall takes care, and the opening has to be sealed against water and pests afterward.

The Popular Request: A Half Bath and Laundry on the Main Floor
Many Canton homeowners want to stop carrying laundry to the basement, especially as they get older. Putting a washer, dryer and half bath in a rear addition or a converted back porch is one of the most common projects we plumb. It calls for:
- A washer box with shutoffs and a properly trapped and vented standpipe
- A toilet drain of the right size and a vent that ties into the existing system or exits on its own
- A small sink on its own branch
- A drain pan under the washer if it sits over a finished floor or a crawlspace
Our Order of Work on an Addition
We start with a free estimate and a walk-through of both the old house and the addition plans. After you approve the specifications, we install underground lines if there is a slab, then rough in drains, vents and supply lines once framing is done. Each stage is tested and inspected before it is covered. The tie-in to the existing system is planned so your water is off for as short a time as possible. Final connections follow after drywall and finish work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my water pressure drop after adding a bathroom?
It can if the water service or main branch lines are undersized or corroded. We check both before designing the addition and recommend upgrades only when they are needed.
Can plumbing run through a crawlspace in winter?
Yes, but supply lines need protection. We route them on the warm side of the insulation, keep them away from vents and outside walls, and insulate any exposed runs.
Is a first-floor laundry worth adding to an older home?
For many owners, yes, especially for anyone who wants to avoid basement stairs. The key is a well-placed drain and vent, accessible shutoffs and a drain pan under the washer.
Do you only work in the city of Canton?
No. We also serve North Canton, Louisville, Massillon, Navarre and the rest of Stark County from our shop in East Canton.
