Trench with polyethylene propane pipe and tracer wire on a Navarre property
Navarre, Stark County

Underground Propane Line Installation and Repair in Navarre

Navarre sits along the Tuscarawas River in southwestern Stark County, about 13 miles from our East Canton shop, with rural land stretching toward Brewster, Beach City and Bolivar. On these properties the propane tank is often well away from the house, which puts a lot of weight on the line buried between them. K & K Plumbing installs and repairs propane yard lines in Navarre and the surrounding countryside.

The Line You Never See

The yard line carries propane vapor from the first-stage regulator at the tank to the second-stage regulator at the house. It is out of sight, so it is out of mind until something goes wrong. On larger rural lots, that line may run a long distance across lawn, driveway or field, and every foot of it has to stay tight for decades.

We focus on getting that buried section right, whether it is a new installation, an extension to a barn or garage, or the replacement of an old line that has started to leak.

How We Install a Buried Propane Line

Every underground job begins with locating what is already in the ground. Ohio's 811 system marks public utilities, and we ask you about private items such as septic tanks, leach fields, well lines, drain tile and invisible pet fences, which are common on country properties.

From there the steps are straightforward but each one matters:

  • Trench to the proper depth along the planned route
  • Lay polyethylene gas pipe on clean fill, free of sharp rock
  • Run tracer wire alongside so the line can be found later
  • Install transition risers at the tank end and the building end
  • Pressure test before backfilling
  • Backfill, compact and restore the surface

Why Tracer Wire Matters

Polyethylene pipe is excellent underground because it does not rust, but it cannot be found with a metal detector. The copper tracer wire laid beside it gives locating equipment something to follow. Years from now, when you put in a fence, plant trees or dig a new septic field, that wire is what keeps an excavator from cutting your gas line. We bring the wire up at both risers so it is easy to connect to.

Frost, Water and Low Ground

Northeast Ohio's freeze and thaw cycles move soil every winter. Pipe buried too shallow, or risers that are rigidly fixed while the ground heaves around them, can be stressed until a fitting fails. We use risers designed for the job and bury the line at proper depth to limit that movement.

Properties on low ground near the river face another concern: high water. Floodwater can float or shift an unanchored tank and pull on its connections. If your property floods, talk with your propane supplier about tank anchoring, and have the system leak tested before putting it back in service after any flood.

Repairing a Leaking Yard Line

Signs of an underground leak include a tank that drains unusually fast, a strip of dead grass, bubbles rising in puddles over the route, or a faint odor outdoors. We isolate the buried section from the house piping and test it alone. If it is losing pressure and it is old steel or copper, we generally replace the full run rather than patch it.

Navarre homeowners often pair propane work with appliance upgrades such as vented or vent-free gas logs in Navarre or a Navarre gas water heater replacement. For a full overview of what we do with LP systems, visit our Stark County propane line page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of pipe do you use for a buried propane line?

We typically use polyethylene gas pipe made for underground fuel service, laid with copper tracer wire and connected to the above-grade piping with transition risers.

Can you extend my propane line to a garage or barn?

Yes. We size the extension for the added appliance, trench and lay a new buried branch, and install a regulator and shutoff at the outbuilding.

My property floods sometimes. Is my propane system at risk?

Floodwater can shift an unanchored tank and strain its connections. Ask your supplier about anchoring, and have the system leak tested before using it again after high water.

Will installing a new yard line tear up my lawn?

Trenching does disturb a narrow strip, but we backfill, compact and restore the surface. Grass typically fills back in over the following season.
