Curbless shower drain and handheld shower rough-in for an in-law suite in Hudson, Ohio

In-Law Suite and Aging-in-Place Plumbing for Hudson Homes

Hudson families often plan for the long term, whether that means bringing a parent home or making sure they can stay in their own house as they age. A first-floor suite with an accessible bath, or a separate in-law wing with a small kitchen, needs new plumbing designed for safety and ease of use. K & K Plumbing lays out and installs those systems so they work today and keep working as needs change.

What an In-Law Suite Usually Includes

Most suites we plumb have a bedroom, a full bathroom and some kind of kitchenette, often with laundry close by. The aim is independence without a full second household. Plumbing-wise, that means a new group of fixtures far from the existing kitchen and baths, sometimes in a new addition and sometimes in a converted garage or lower level.

Hudson's housing ranges from historic homes near the village green to large newer houses on wooded lots, and the approach differs. In an older house, we spend more time finding routes and assessing old pipe. In a newer one, the challenge is usually distance from the existing water heater and stack.

Bathrooms Built for Accessibility

An accessible bathroom depends on decisions made at rough-in, long before grab bars go up:

  • A curbless or roll-in shower with a recessed floor and a linear or center drain
  • A shower valve placed where it can be reached from outside the spray, plus a handheld on a slide bar
  • A comfort-height toilet with clearance on at least one side
  • A wall-hung or open vanity so a wheelchair or seat can roll under, with the drain set back and supply lines protected
  • Pressure-balancing or thermostatic valves to prevent scalding
  • Solid blocking in the walls for grab bars, added while the framing is open

Curbless showers need early coordination

To avoid a step at the shower entry, the subfloor has to be lowered or the drain positioned to allow a gentle slope. That is a framing and plumbing decision made together. We work with your builder so the drain height and floor structure match.

Kitchenette and bathroom wet wall in a new in-law suite addition

Kitchenette and Laundry Plumbing

A kitchenette needs a sink drain, a vent and hot and cold supply. If it includes a dishwasher or a refrigerator with a water line, those are roughed in too. Placing the kitchenette on the same wall as the suite's bathroom keeps the plumbing compact. A stackable washer and dryer in a closet off the suite needs a drain box, shutoffs and ideally a drain pan with a leak sensor.

Hot Water for a Separate Suite

If the suite is a long way from the main water heater, its occupant may wait a long time for warm water at the sink and shower. Options include a small dedicated water heater for the suite, a recirculation system or a point-of-use heater at the sink. A separate heater also gives the occupant independent control. Our water heater installation service can handle that part of the project.

How We Bring It Together

Every project starts with a free estimate and a conversation about who will use the space and how. Once you approve the plan, we install underground lines if needed, then rough in drains, vents and supply lines after framing. Each stage is tested and inspected before it is covered, and final connections come after finish work. When you need help with tile, vanities and finishes, our bathroom remodeling team can step in. More detail is on our new plumbing installation page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a garage be converted into an in-law suite with a bathroom?

Often, yes. The garage slab usually has to be cut for drains, and the floor height and insulation need attention. We check where the new drains can connect before you commit to the layout.

What is the most important plumbing detail for an accessible bathroom?

The shower. A curbless entry, a reachable valve and a handheld shower make the biggest difference, and they all depend on decisions made at rough-in.

Does an in-law suite need its own water heater?

Not always, but it helps if the suite is far from the main heater or the occupant wants independent control. A small dedicated heater or a recirculation system are common fixes.

How far is Hudson from your shop?
