The Complete Guide to PEX Piping Systems: Installation Service, and Repair in Stark County, OH

PEX, short for cross-linked polyethylene, has become one of the most common water supply materials in new homes and repipes. K & K Plumbing installs, extends and repairs PEX water systems for homes and commercial properties across Stark County and the neighboring counties, from a single fitting repair to a full manifold system. Every project starts with a free estimate.
PEX work covers more than full repipes. Much of what we do involves adding to, adapting or fixing an existing system. Typical projects include:
PEX is durable, but it is only as good as the installation. Most problems we see come from fittings, exposure or physical damage rather than the tubing failing on its own.
Watch for drips or mineral crust at a fitting, tubing that looks chalky or faded where it has been exposed to light, kinks that restrict flow, chew marks in attics or crawl spaces, and tubing touching a water heater flue or other heat source. A sudden change in pressure at one fixture can also point to a kinked or crushed line behind the wall. If you see any of these, our leak repair team can find and fix the problem.
Older homes add one more sign: PEX that was spliced into galvanized or copper years ago and now leaks at the transition. That is usually the old metal failing next to the fitting, not the PEX. In those cases we cut back to sound pipe, and if the metal is failing in several places, we talk with you about replacing it rather than adding another adapter.

Whatever the building, we size lines based on the real fixture demand and route them away from heat, sunlight and sharp edges.
In homes, PEX shines because it bends around framing, needs far fewer fittings than rigid pipe and can be fished through finished walls. That means less demolition during a repipe and quicker rough-ins during remodels. It is also quieter than copper, with less noise from water hammer and flow.
Offices, retail spaces and apartment buildings benefit from PEX's speed of installation and the ability to give each unit or restroom group its own manifold and shutoffs. Larger diameter mains, mechanical rooms and areas near heat sources may still call for copper, so many commercial systems use both materials.
There are three main grades of PEX, made by different cross-linking methods. PEX-A is the most flexible and can be expanded to accept fittings, and a kink can often be fixed with heat. PEX-B is stiffer, widely available and typically joined with crimp or clamp rings. PEX-C is less common in whole-house work.
Connections fall into a few families: copper crimp rings, stainless clamp (cinch) rings, expansion fittings used with PEX-A and push-fit fittings that are handy for repairs. We match the fitting system to the tubing and use the correct tools and gauges to verify every connection. Mismatched tools and fittings are one of the most common causes of PEX leaks we repair.
When PEX meets existing metal pipe, we use proper transition fittings, and near the water heater we connect with a metal section so the tubing is not exposed to heat. Our copper piping service handles the metal side of those transitions.

First, we visit for a free estimate, look at your existing plumbing and decide with you between a manifold layout, where each fixture has its own line back to a central panel, or a trunk-and-branch layout, which uses fewer feet of tubing. Second, you approve the specifications, including materials, routing and schedule. Third, we install the system, pressure test it and complete a quality inspection before walls are closed.
For whole-house replacements, see our repiping services page. For additions and new builds, our new plumbing installation team handles the full rough-in.
Before installation, clear access to the basement, water heater and any walls being opened, and let us know about planned future fixtures so we can leave capped stubs or spare manifold ports. After installation, PEX needs very little attention, but a few habits matter:

PEX is flexible cross-linked polyethylene tubing used for hot and cold water supply lines. It bends around framing, resists corrosion and scale, and needs fewer fittings than rigid pipe.
Each has advantages. PEX-A is more flexible and uses expansion fittings, while PEX-B is stiffer and usually joined with crimp or clamp rings. Both perform well when installed with the correct fittings and tools.
Yes. We use transition fittings designed for joining PEX to copper or other metal pipe, which is common in partial repipes and remodels.
Most leaks come from a ring that was not crimped or clamped correctly, the wrong fitting for the tubing type, or a cut that was not square. We cut out the bad connection and install a new one with verified tools.
PEX should not be left exposed to sunlight, which degrades it. It can be buried or sleeved for outdoor runs when installed correctly.
